The budget recommendation is £353 similar to above but using the High resolution SCreen to get the pre discount price to £299+
This is specced for qualty gaming on a budget. The graphics processor is the important piece of the jigsaw. The Celeron CPU tself should be far faster than a pentium 4 2.8 GHZ and its is graphcs that matter for anything 3D.

You can adjust the deals to suit. There are other combinations for this target price. This one has the high resolution screen popular for gamers(£353 deal) and the NECCESSARY graphics card upgrade.

Those who vote cold please have etiquette to politely explain.
IF THERE IS ANYTHING LESS THAN £400 THAT PLAYS GAMES FASTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT DOES NOT EXIST. Please prove this wrong.

I agree its a nice spec for a gaming laptop. Shame about the 80gb drive and only Vista Basic though since it would run Premium's Media and Aero features no problem.

with 160GB drive and the amazing 8600 graphics its £351.33.
Can do similar with Vista Business for Aero or XP Pro but not such an attractive option.

If it dies in 3 days I'll pop it back in with the 160GB drive for £351.33.

I dont have a clue how to vote hot or cold(maybe something missing on my screen????)

It is bad etiquette to vote cold without any polite argument. (edited line)

If it was Core 2 Duo 1.8 at £330 it might get voted hot whereas a Single Core 2 Processor plus the 8600 graphics processor totally stomps on it for 3D power. Its like 5 frames per second in a game for Dual Core 2 versus 35 frames per second game for Single Core + Grahics Core.

It is total cowardice to vote cold without any argument.

Dont take it so personally....many on here dont have the time to post on every deal they vote on to say why they voted that way. Plus it would make the posts pretty dull to read with everyones' explanations as to how and why they voted. The voting system is just a quick way to judge peoples views.

To vote look a the up and down red and blue arrows to the left of the title for the thread. Click on up to vote hot or down to vote cold.

I've only bought stuff here that I have seen so unless having a strong reason I would not vote something cold.
(Not that I am able to vote as dont know how/ have a screen bit missing?) OK got the voting back. Its my customised browser that confused me.

This is creeping back up from a low of -30.
Edit thanks for feedback bigGanny and all. Just baffled on my 2nd item submission. My 1st item was hottest of the day yesterday. And you are right about the bad label coward. Deleted it and replaced it with etiquette.
[mod]#5
We have a little group of dell haters who vote all the dell deals cold regardless.

alandarl you may get better voting if you manage to make your deal posts a bit tidier so members can easily see the spec for the price, you can add all the comments about the deal in another post below the deal to make it easier on the eye.

I wouldnt go asking for heat all the time and DEMANDING to know who voted cold and labelling people cowards - this is a community and going around pleading for this and condeming that gets a cold vote from me. It it no way personally affects you so post the deal and if it is good it will get heat, I wouldnt lose sleep over it. A lot of deals start off cold as people who arent intersted in the item dismiss it as cold, maybe not right but thats life - but then as people interested in the items get round to seeing them they warm up.

I regularly vote cold and hot without posting as I dont have time but I do know whether or not its a good price and vote accordingly.

Not really. Its the graphics card that matters most here. (for games that is)
A Core 2 Duo 2GHZ with 8400GS will be beaten by an M540 1.86HGhz with 8600GT in most games.
Right it is an insane pairing but many cant afford £555 for a Core 2 2GHZ and 8600GT pairing.

With the right tweaking on games resolutions settings etc so that the CPU and GRAPHICS combine well this will rocket.
Think of the 8600GT as the 2nd core.

And again apologies for my bad etiquette.

I'd love to see one of the mags/hardware web sites do some insane testing on these games deals versus the supposedly sane ones..
You could benchmark £330 Versus £550 Versus £999 and get some crazy crazy results.
#8
Nice system, but surely for a gaming laptop, that's a complete dog of a processor? It's the same one I've got in my Dell laptop that I use for work; and I don't think of it as being particularly powerful.
#9
SO why have a Core 2 Duo 2GHZ with an 8400M for 18 frames per second
Compared to a Celeron M540 1.86Ghz with an 8600GT for 25 frames per second?

The £180 cheaper Celeron one wins in most games.

Anyway this has been voted cold even though nothing below £400 can beat it for games.
I've not seen a 8600M GT laptop below £500 to be honest. (apart from Dell of course).

Noones ever calls a Pentium 4 2.8GHZ CPU a dog. This CPU is actually faster.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html
The chart is a quality rough guide and quotes the 540M being faster than the Pentium 4 3.6 GHZ. (not sure if it does beat that every time but it is fast)
#10
I'm not sure that coming 85th in a league table of processors (74th for just notebooks) makes it a "true gaming laptop", but each to his own.

You're right - the P4 2.8 wasn't a dog - but processor technology has come on a LOT since then!

voted hot, from the perspective that it makes for a great base system of which, in the fullness of time, one could update the processor. if you spend more on the processor from Dell now at the expense of the graphics card, you're a) paying over the odds for Dell's CPU update prices, and b) it's easier to find a supplier for a CPU upgrade than an upgrade to the graphics card.
#12
It would be nice if those voting cold could find something better for the purpose and price.

I wouldnt vote a bottle of pickled gerkins cold because I dont eat them.

Better to keep quiet mate. The more you moan, the more people will vote your deal cold

no worries. I'm not posting anymore. (only posted for 1st time 2 days ago.)
It seems hot items can sometimes be very random here.

In the years that Ive used this site I never realised that you have to really do an extensive search if you are looking for something specific.

This has been a very useful exercise.

change a graphics card easily on a laptop?

Is that possible?
#16
I'm totally with you one this one alandarl...

People vote on things that they wouldn't use or dont want or even who its made by... Rather than it being a good or bad price for the actual item... IMHO it really is starting to spoil this site...

I have started looking at all the deals, rather than the ones that get voted hot.

If people vote it cold, then surely they are saying that they can find it cheaper elsewhere!!?? If so, please take the time and make a post!!

Have voted this hot...

P.S. have never known of being able to change a GPU for a laptop :)

that was my point; while I think the Dell service guide (available on the support site) shows how it can be done, actually obtaining one would be a very hard find, so best starting with the best graphics card you're likely to want, and then upgrade the CPU if necessary in future (that's also explained in the service guide) - you can buy mobile CPUs from most PC parts suppliers.
#18
I have added heat as I have found the post useful in that it has again helped people like me go to Dell and use the post as a starting point to eventually get what they want. Don't be put off by negative feedback.
#19
pleased you did.

Always better to find your own recipe. I tried to hint in the post.

Nope, it's fairly rare to be able to change a laptop graphics card and in cases where you can it's unlikely you can upgrade past the fastest card that was available at the time rather than something newer.

Although I haven't voted cold I think the title is pretty misleading, at a squeeze it's a budget gaming laptop but it's not the 'true gaming laptop' the title implies especially with a single core processor.

yep should have just said 'gaming laptop'

Overhyped slightly but on a technical note a Celeron M with a 8600GT absolutely kills a Core 2 Duo 2Ghz with the 8400GS.

These things even up over time - you'll post something you spot and think aint too bad and it'll take off. Sometimes you'll stick something on here and it fades away with hardly a response - I get enough from this site to warrant giving a little back every now and then and if it recieves world wide acclaim then bonus but it doesnt it wont stop me using and posting again.

But one thing I mentioned before in every post you have done you've begged for heat and slated cold votes - there are a lot of people who will give you a cold un for that straight away. Just let it go and see how you get on. Once your post is dead heat means nowt - if your posting useful deals your rep will build up (and there is no negative rep) and everyone will then see what a valuable member of this forum you are. . .

Out of the whole post basically your saying that C2D 1.6 doesn't perform as well as a Celeron M when either are combined with a 8600GT or a 8400GS?

Surely with more games being relased that utilise the 'dual core' aspect of that chip the celeron might run stuff now however in six months/year when the 8600Gt is still reasonably good will the Celeron not be showing its age??

Correct me if im wrong, I am not that well up on C2D v Celeron performance etc.
#24
I think that the positive effect of the better graphics out weghs the fact that the processor is not as good....at least for gaming.

For nearly any other use the C2D would be the deciding factor in laptop performance.
#25
However if you had the oppertunity to got for a better processor for not a lot more money surely it would be benificial? Most people I assume would be using this for normla apps most of the time and games a small amount of the time but would want the power there if they needed it.

These days if you were going for a performance laptop for gaming only a Vostro would probably not be your first port of call anyway.

The 5% discount voucher http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148707 now adds more value to any configuration you may wish to apply to this ecode when bought via dell small business site. Dont forget Quidco too.
[mod]#27
I have a Vostro 1700 which is pretty much top spec and games quite well but it is just too big other than as a desktop replacement, so I ordered N0215001 with a nice spec except for lowest cpu and hard drive on 25th, it got dispatched today 27th and will be with me 29th. Not bad going Dell!
I have a spare SATA 100GB 7200rpm hard drive and better cpu waiting to fit once it arrives rather than pay Dells prices ;-)

Hi,

Can anyone advise on battery please. What sort of running time are you likely to get with the 6 cell in this configuration or is 9 cell a worthy option. I realise it would stick out on this 1500 series as I have a 1400 with 9 cell ( thanks Mike T for your prev posts on this). Many thanks for any observations / advice.

I always search on the most discussed tab as opposed to the hot tab. It gives a much more realistic reflection of what's truly hot (as people are posting a lot about it).

Hot BTW. Would definitely go for the bigger hard drive.
