Heat on this.

If you have the money, these are one of the best you can buy. Although I vouch still for the ZGemma H.2S boxes - one of the best value twin tuner boxes that's now OpenATV certified.

Either way, hoooottt

Nothing wrong with Zgemma's.

Insanely over priced - you can get a reliable Chinese (zgemma) / German Box that will do all of this reliably for under £200.00 - these are simply not worth the money in my opinion

So what channels do you get?

Free-to air satellite channels. Or you can go down the custom firmware route on certain boxes & pay £20 or so per year
for the whole she-bang of sky channels inc ppv
However this is HUKD, not HUKC/S

I had the original Vu+ Duo after using many others (Pace/Humax/Topfield etc) over many years. Far more expensive than anything I'd bought previously but a fantastic box. My viewing habits have since changed (I don't watch football anymore) so after replacing the known dodgy capacitor for the 3rd time I sold it for £50 and bought a Zgemma single tuner which is the cheapest box I've ever bought and also pretty good for what it is.

Our Zgemma has been relegated to the Bedroom as its rather sluggish. (It is a Star 2S).

I looked into a a Vu Duo2, but they are very expensive to me.
I settled for a Gigablue Ultra UE - Fast box with front display. Equivalent performance and features as the Duo2 but at half the price.

Gigablue Ultra UE £149.99

And it is Openvix capable.

I've had a clone dream box and also a cloud I box II plus. Both worked great and didn't cost the earth.

Alot of boxes on ebay with "gifts"..is there any particular box you guys recommend for these "gifts"?

Nice. Had the original duo and then sold that for the solo. Love how small the solo was. Is this just as big as the original duo?

Is this box some kind of super upgrade on a standard sky + box ? apologies for my ignorance but this looks and sounds interesting and no doubt my next unescesary purchase.

would this accept a sky card or is it done differently ?

Sky boxes are great for Sky and nothing else. These are good for everything else (and Sky to some extent). None of the "nice" features of a Sky box are present without a bit of work eg EPG, series record, auto channel retune. That said some very nice features a Sky box doesn't have are available eg recording and watching on a streaming player in another room, apps, skins etc. This is really a hobby box that is powerful but not really a plug and play.

No its basically a free view box that can be flashed / programmed so it picks up ALL the sky channels including PPV sports with no buffering like Kodi sometimes does. No HD sky channels though only SD

I have had this ZGemma-Star-H-2S for 4 months now and am very happy, I had a clone DM800HD previously and this is much better and I like the added Kodi that's built in.

I know you can get it cheaper but I liked the fact it was plug and play

Would love one of these but just can't justify the cost considering it wouldn't offer me much more than the Zgemma H1 I already have. I've both Satellite and cable in now, the latter I only got yesterday and it's outstanding. I pay £10 per year for all the Sky channels and £25 per year for the Virgin channels. For the latter you need Virgin broadband, which I believe is the best anyhow, and to split the cable coming in with a splitter, attach two cables, one to the router and one to the receiver and away you go. The cable quality is outstanding, full HD channels, whereas you don't get that on satellite.

Also you should always go with OpenATV on Zgemma's as OpenVix isn't supported. I've OpenATV, RedHD skin which makes it look like Virgin, full EPG and I've attached a 500gb hard drive to it for recording, rewinding etc.

I'm not sure the Vu would do much more than that. I'm guessing what you get is a quicker experience, more responsive etc. but for £250 more, I can't justify it.

The VU+ is the best box money can buy spec wise but it's big downfall is that there is no HD cable tuners available for it, only HD satellite tuners.

Through card sharing you can only get SD satellite Sky channels. Full HD on cable.

I have a Solo2 which I paid about £320 for 3-4 years ago. Just got a VU+ Turbo USB tuner for mine few days ago to use with Cable..haven't had time to configure it but I have heard good things.

thanks Steford, after a lot of reading last night this sounds very interesting but time consuming a hobby on its own right. I think I would need more time.e in my life to fully appreciate this.

Nah. ZGemma boxes are officially and well supported (OpenATV and OpenPLI) so that clears the old cobweb myths and such. What else? The ZGemma H.2S is one of the cheapest dual core, dual tuner boxes you can buy and are backed well by the community. I see you're still stuck in old times.
