PLEASE NOTE THIS IS FOR WINTER 2016-2017 so even if you have had a payment earlier this year this will not stop you applying for this years payment.

If eligible the £140 is credited to your electric account. What kind of heating you have does not affect eligibility.

Some companies are accepting online applications already this year others are still saying it closed as that refers to WINTER 2015-2916 so in those cases you may have to phone them to get registered early for the WINTER 2016-2017 discount.

Again limited government funds so its first come first served for those who qualify.

Eligibility

You qualify for the discount if on 10 July 2016 all of the following apply:

your electricity supplier was part of the scheme

your name (or your partner’s) was on the bill

you were getting the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (even if you get Savings Credit as well)

If you don’t qualify

You may be able to apply directly to your electricity supplier for help if you don’t get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit but:

you’re on a low income

you get certain means-tested benefits

Check with your supplier to see if you’re eligible and how to apply.

The following suppliers are part of the scheme:

British gas are no longer on this scheme. even if you click on the link it will tell you. Found that out when I joined :(
#3
Had no idea British Gas had stopped this.

I take it you needed to be with the supplier on or before July 10, meaning it's too late to switch?

Funny, I have just applied for this year through Sainsburys Energy , which is supplied by British Gas......I'd double check to be honest.
It may be that you are reading about last years scheme being closed ? British Gas are saying that the Warm Home Discount Scheme is now open for applications. link here :-

https://www.britishgas.co.uk/products-and-services/gas-and-electricity/the-warm-home-discount.html

Like I said , I've just applied online and been accepted instantly after submitting the form , here is the link to the online form :-

HEAT added , saved me £140 !! Thought this was a 5 year scheme to run from 2011-2016 , had no idea it was being extended ;)

I am able to keep my electricity consumption fairly low, but as many people have gas central heating, wouldn't it be great to have some sort of reduction on gas bills in order to have a warmer home ?

Not everybody has gas for heating, but everybody has electric and there's some who rely on economy 7 for their heating. That's why the payment goes towards electric.

Thanks for the heads up SHEPS
After claiming this morning with sainsburys energy-Who are british gas as such.I was told the scheme has been renewed for 5 more years.

Does anyone know or have a link to a clear explanation as to how this works? The electric bit of my bill is very little so is proportionate for example or do you get 140.00 offset no matter how little the bill is?
#30
All I have found is this govuk brief explanation. link
#31
if you qualify they just credit it to your account.. or thats whats happened to me in the past...i hear same goes if it a prepaid meter too.
#32
Thank you, I have had this for the last few years being a carer and it really helps. Just applied again for this year.

that will be last year not the one coming .. if you phone they should be accepting requests for the form to be sent out to you for this year so to speak... if you change year to winter it makes more sense lol

Don't think it matters , we have gas central heating anyway so surely energy bills to heat the home would be mainly gas , no ?
I wouldn't worry about that side of things too much , more the qualifying criteria , if you are eligible then £140 would be offset from your account balance.

I have edited and will keep editing original post to try include more links and to make the explanation of how it all works clearer..and to help stop any confusion between winter 2015-2016 with the one coming which is 2016-2017.

many thanks to everyone who has commented and help with this too :)

Thanks for the info. That's great then as it spans 7 months doesn't it so I guess that amounts to 20.00 per month off during the cold months?
