300's Zack Snyder brings Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' critically acclaimed comic book WATCHMEN to the big screen, courtesy of DC Comics and Warner Bros. Pictures. Set in an alternate universe circa 1985, the film's world is a highly unstable one where a nuclear war is imminent between America and Russia. Superheroes have long been made to hang up their tights thanks to the government-sponsored Keene Act, but that all changes with the death of The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a robust ex-hero commando whose mysterious freefall out a window piques the interest of one of the country's last remaining vigilantes, Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley). His investigation leads him to caution many of his other former costumed colleagues, including Dr. Manhattan, Night Owl (Patrick Wilson), Ozymandias (Matthew Goode), Sally Jupiter (Carla Gugino), and her daughter, The Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman). Heralded for bringing the world of superheroes into the literary world, WATCHMEN gave the super-powered mythos a real-life grounding that had been missing in mainstream comics to that point. The film adaptation had languished in one form of development hell or another for years after the book's release, with various directors on and off the project, including Terry Gilliam, David Hayter, and Darren Aronofsky, as well as Paul Greengrass, whose eventual dismissal stemmed from budget conflicts with the studio.

is this in store or online?
#2
Online, not sure about instore.
#3
Probably add an extra £5 or £10 onto the price if you are buying instore as very rarely do HMV shop prices appear the same on their online ones

This film is just awful. I know some people must like it, but for three hours I sat in the cinema waiting for it to get good, and it never did.

i was looking forward to the cinema release, but then I watched a few trailers & didn't get as far as booking a ticket.

Think I'll wait for a showing on Sky TV instead.

Thanks for listing though, steve81; you reminded me that one of my kids wanted the PS3 game ("Watchmen The End is Nigh (Parts 1 & 2)") for Christmas & one of Santa's elves had forgotten until now.

BFN,

Although it was a poor film I voted it hot as it is a good deal. I was in the Middlesbrough HMV today and it was £24.99.

It's an excellent film. Very faithful to the original book which was a seminal classic.

If you are expecting a simplistic Ironman-style crash bang hollywood actioner then you will be disappointed, if you want to see a thoughtful and unique subversion of the traditional superhero genre where your preconceptions will actually be challenged, then watch this. If you found this boring or didn't understand, I respectfully suggest you stick to Transformers/GI Joe etc.

He has a point though. It's a cracking film, but probably not what people expect.

Not saying that Transformers/Iron Man were bad films, I liked them, but everyone I know who didn't like watchmen thought it was boring because there 'wasn't enough action' or the superheroes were 'a bit crap' or something like that.

Can I just say I WHOLE-HEARTEDLY disagree with you, I've grown up with The Watchmen, which is, as most know, the most perfect graphic novel ever BUT I would never say Snyder has made a seminal film with this crap- sure he tried his best to capture the essence but I feel he focused on the wrong things and cut out too much of the story. AND WTF was with the 10 minute static shot of night-owl banging SS in Archimedes? that was done in about 4 panels in the book, I'm sure- and it was sooo not sexy, after about the second minute i was looking at my watch!! :P

Oh and can I also say get off your self bought high horse, if people don't like a film it doesn't make them thick- you have to remember that the source material is so dense that anyone coming in who's not familiar with WM would have a hard time getting on with it as Snyder has made it so hard to follow the film and catch onto the important factors.

I never said anyone was thick, just that most people who didn't like the film were expecting something else. You're the one who is insinuating that people who didn't like it are thick!

You didn't like the film because it had an overlong sex-scene? Bit odd but fair enough - personally I thought he captured the essence and feel of the book well, and the small plot changes (removal of the stupid squid creature, which made no sense at all, blaming the whole thing on Dr Manhattan, which made a lot of sense) were actually better than in the book and rounded off the plot more. Obviously he couldn't include the Black Freighter stuff as that would have made the film ridiculously overlong (it was already arguably overlong)

Having seen the film a couple of times, and read the book. I think the film is the more "belieavble" - the books gets a bit silly towards the end.

isn't there an ultimate addition supposed to be coming out which combines the black freighter and movie footage together?
