Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the 'Doomsday Clock' - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight.

When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. i would think it depends on what you want, the webisodes.booklet on the film being made, or extra film footage! I would go with film footage if r1 would play on bluray player. I think i'll hold out for the directors cut in uk...

To be honest this is a better deal from play.com >http://www.play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/4-/8922090/Watchmen/Product.html

Its a 2 disc special edition plus you get a booklet and the digital copy - plus 5% off using RAC code or varsity card.

The original offer is for the US "Director's Cut" whilst the second is for the UK "Theatrical Cut".

EDIT: ricjd beat me to it!

To reiterate; If it's a Warner Brothers title it will be region free; all their discs are...

There is another version certified for release in America; "Ultimate Edition"

If you google you'll see this version is planned for 'fall' and has a 5 hour running time with the Black Freighter edited back in. Where as this "Directors Cut" does have the newstand scenes they dont cut to the animation.

Arrgghh, I would like to get this but don't want to have to buy the ulimate edition as well in a few months.

Wasn't the Playstation Network "Watchmen" games meant to be included with the Blu-ray movie release?
#12
Well, my copy of this arrived this morning and it's not region free, unless I'm doing something incredibly dumb. Which is always a possibility. Any ideas peeps?

You must be doing something wrong because it has now been confirmed that it is REGION FREE.

http://movietyme.blogspot.com/2009/07/watchmen-directors-cut-blu-ray-region.html

Have you updated the firmware for your Blu-Ray player, this usually sorts these sort of problems out, the PS3 usually does this itself with the push of a few buttons.

It has also been confirmed that some of the good features from the Directors Cut will NOT be on the Ultimate Edition. It looks like if you want the normal Theatrical Cut and the Directors Cut and all the Special Features you have to buy all 3 versions of the film. I still think the best version is the Directors Cut, currently waiting for it to arrive.

First Details of Watchmen Ultimate Edition BD Emerge

Early copies of the 'Watchmen: Director's Cut' Blu-ray are surfacing, and the release contains a flier with some early details of the Ultimate Collector's Edition of the movie. It will be released in December and will only be available through June 2010. Over two hours of bonus content will be included.

The movie version in this edition will be the director's cut, augmented with the animated comic 'Tales of the Black Freighter' woven into the narrative. The total length of the cut is not known yet; the theatrical cut was 162 minutes long, whereas the director's cut featured in the first-edition Blu-ray is 186 minutes long. As we reported, Paramount is releasing the theatrical cut in the UK.

The special features will also include the mockumentary 'Under the Hood' (already released as a companion to 'Tales of the Black Freighter') and 'Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic'.

The Ultimate Collector's Edition will not include most of the special features available on the upcoming Director's Cut, such as the "walk-on" Maximum Movie Mode. However, it will include a new audio commentary with Snyder and artist Dave Gibbons. For a list of the special features on the Director's Cut, see our post of May 12.

Warner is offering a $10 coupon for the Ultimate Collector's Edition to registered members of its Insider Rewards program as of December 1 (click here to become a member).

It didn't work unfortunately. I updated the firmwear and that went fine, but it still says it cannot find the disc. It was actually bought for me as a present and instead of buying the US version I asked for, they bought the Canadian version for some reason. I'm not sure why that makes a difference, but it certainly seems to.

Oh well.

I was wondering how you got it early as the American version is still not shipping yet.
I had originally planned to buy mine from PlayUSA, but was slightly put of when it said that it may have dual text on the cover English/French so it sounded like a Canadian version. I only ordered from Amazon.com recently as it has had it's price reduced a couple of times over the last two weeks and bought the price down to the same as PlayUSA including shipping.

I just had a look on the Amazon.ca site to look at the Canadian version and it seems to have the same spec as the US version (released by Warner).

When mine arrives I will report back if it works.

The only thing I can think of is that it has some really upto date features on the disc which may not be supported by your player and that is why it does not work, you may find that in the future an update is made for your player that will sort things out.

What you could do is try and see if it works on another Blu-Ray player, try it out at Currys, Dixons, etc. Just say you want to see what the film looks like on a certain TV as your thinking of buying one, they will soon play the disc for you.

I just saw this comment on Amazon.co.uk from someone who imported the Canadian version from PlayUSA, they report that it works fine on there UK PS3.

Just to confirm, I watched this last night, received from PlayUSA, and it played in my UK PS3.
Looked great too :)

Interesting note above about Play sending Canadian releases. I was going to order Fast and Furious from PlayUSA, as Movietyme list it as tested region free...but if it's a different release, the region coding could differ too.

Anyway, can confirm that Watchmen played fine, and I really enjoyed it, all over three hours of it :)

I've emailed Sony support to see if they have any ideas (my player is the BDP-S550). The odd thing is that the second disc of Special Features plays absolutely fine, which seems to confirm the idea that it's a region free release. Very odd that disc one won't play. I guess I'll just have to hope that Sony release some updated firmware sometime soon.

Nice deal - thanks :)

Maybe it's a dodgy disc, has happened before, I think it happened with the Iron Man release, they then had to send out replacement discs.

Hmm, well I can only sit tight and see what happens. Thanks for mentioning it though. Gives me a glimmer of hope.

Still waiting on mine to arrive.

I just remembered that I have a Blu-Ray which was region locked it was "X-Men 3" when I put the disc in a message came up on the screen saying that this disc is the wong region for my player. I thought I would mention this because when you put your Watchmen Blu-Ray in did you get a similar message...? if not then it is a firmware problem as you should get a message if it was region locked.
#25
It just said "cannot play". It certainly didn't mention anything about the region being a problem. Plus the special features disc plays fine, which does suggest its a firmware issue rather than region coding.

I'm still waiting on a response from both sony & playusa. I may have to email them again I guess :)

Has your US copy turned up yet and is it working ok on your PS3/Blu Ray player? Did you order from Amazon or PLAYUSA? I'm gonna order the US version, but I'm put off a little by PLAYUSA's "This is disc will not play on none US players". Cheers in advance.

I ordered from Amazon.com and chose the cheapest postage so will probably take until end of this week to arrive or early next week.

I would not worry about the PlayUSA warning as they put it on everything even if it is Region Free.

I only decided against PlayUSA as they seem to get there stuff from Canada as it is cheaper, but you do sometimes get French text on the covers as that is the other language spoken in Canada.

Yeah, thanks so much, I looked on PlayUSA and of course in the Special Features Box it has "English/French Packaging". Think I'm going to go for amazon version now, thanks.

OK here is an update for everyone.

I ordered my copy of "Watchmen - Directors Cut" from Amazon.com on the 15th July 2009. The actual Blu-Ray was to be released on the 21 July 2009, on the 21st July 2009 I got an email from Amazon.com telling me my order had been shipped and would be with me between August 14, 2009 - September 3, 2009 based on my shipping method. Well it actually turned up today 29th July 2009, glad I chose the slowest cheapest shipping method as they seem to usually get here quick anyway, in the end it only took 8 days to arrive.

The Blu-Ray comes in a 3D slip case with the actual Blu-Ray box inside that, when you open it up you will see that the Blu-Ray box contains 3 discs, the film is on the first Blu-Ray, The special Features are on the second Blu-Ray while a digital copy of the movie is on a DVD.

I have tried the Blu-Ray movie and it worked a treat with no problems at all on my UK PS3.

You do realise that some of the special features like "Maximum Movie Mode" will NOT be included in the ultimate version. It has already been pointed out that if you want the Theatrical version of the film you have to buy the UK version, If you want the Directors Cut you have to buy the USA version and if you want Tales of the Black Freighter inserted back into the Watchmen film and extra new special features you have to buy the Ultimate Version at Christmas, so in short if you want everything you have to buy the film 3 times on Blu-ray. I think I will just stick with the Directors Cut.

I ordered this from Amazon.com for 21.49 - which converts to about £13. Obviously there is postage to pay as well so I ordered a couple of other superior U.S releases (like the 5 Disc Ultimate version of Bladerunner)
