Theyre in the book. And on this disc. Executive Produced by the Director of Watchmen and 300, here are two tales from the most celebrated graphic novel of all time that do not appear in the extraordinary Watchmen Theatrical Feature. Tales of the Black Freighter (featuring the voice of 300s Gerard Butler) brings to strikingly animated life the graphic novels richly layered story-within-a-story, a daring pirate saga whose turbulent events may mirror those in the Watchmens world. Stars from the Watchmen movie t eam up in the amazing live-action/CGI Under the Hood, based on Nite Owls powerful firsthand account of how the hooded adventurers came into existence. Two fan-essential stories.

Looks cool but I think I'll wait for the blu-ray box-set with the main movie. I did read that on release it will be integrated with the movie.. how well that will work though I don't know... I'd hope that they'd also give the option to watch it on it's own.

Come on be real. The tale from teh black freighter was a plot device. Read it again. It's naff. It's meant ot be rubbish. Is anyone seriously buying in to this spin off? Ohhh it was in watchmen. I better buy it  Get something decent like Akira if you haven't already seen it.

Alan Moore is still upset over The League of Extraordinary gentlemen, anything he says about films of his books needs ignoring. IIRC he didn't watch V for Vendetta and doesn't plan on watching The Watchmen, yet he'll rubbish both films at every opportunity.

Don't get me wrong, i think the guy's work is great, i just dislike him. If it's so important to him then why doesn't he work on the films like people have been asking him to? He may not like film as a medium, but at least it would stop people "spoiling" his work.

Just the idea of Watchmen on Blu Ray made me do a little bit of sex wee. I cannot wait for 13.30 this Friday.

But he does have a HUGE point with that film.

Comic book = sublime genius

Film = ill dog's bum wee (americanised at that...)

Wow, can't wait for this. Brilliant.

im also waiting for the movies dvd or more likely BD release as this disc will be put back into the film, im sure you can also watch it without, but to me this is just something put out cheap with most people being oblivious, then in 4-5 months time the DVD comes out and this is worthless.

however if you buy it quick and sell quick you may not lose much, and the bluray is under a tenner too.

as for alan moore, i agree on LOEG - that was a bad film i actually fell asleep watching. V for Vendetta howver is one of my fave films ever, so im sure this will end up in that section and not the league bit.

I'm yet to be bowled over by an Alan Moore film adaptation but this looks like the one to do it.

Yeah, there's the 161 minute theatrical cut, the 191 minute director's cut and the near-4 hour 'Black Freighter' cut. I'm torn between watching this on DVD when it comes out and saving it until I can watch the film through again with The Black Freighter inserted throughout the way it should be.

Yeah, it's a plot device - that's why it needs to be in the movie. If plot devices from the graphic novel weren't included in the movie, there wouldn't be a movie. It may be tongue-in-cheek but it is very well done. The plot of The Black Freighter echoes the main story line in parts, and the narration from The Black Freighter can often be interpreted to be applying to what's going on in the main story as well. There are also excellent graphic matches where the novel 'cuts' between the main story and The Black Freighter. In addition, the news stand owner and the kid who comes to read the comic books are amusing incidental characters.

I'm not one of the purists who read Watchmen 20+ years ago when it first came out, and have been hanging on the edge of their seats since the movie was first talked about 15 years ago, and who hope it will be absolutely perfect. I only read it recently and I'm interested to see how it's been adapted. After reading it I realised it would have to be a long film to do the novel justice, and it is. But still, I was curious as to what they'd do about The Black Freighter subplot - including that would make it incredibly long (4 hours, as it turns out), so it's nice to see that they've given us the best of both worlds by making it, but making it an optional extra. I will quite happily watch 4 hour films, but preferably at home - so I'm glad that I'll see a more streamlined version of the film in the IMAX on Friday and will have a more indulgent version to look forward to when the DVD/Blu Ray is released. It would be nice to have the option to watch it with or without The Black Freighter edited into it on the disk.
