The thing I like about this hard disk is that it has firewire connection. I currently own the 1T My book (USB version) and find it's quite slow when you transfers 100s of Gb.

USB 2 is faster than firewire. If firewire is faster you're using a very old computer (USB 1), got bad drivers for USB, or the chipset used for USB is not very good. Both interfaces can also carry data far faster than it is possible for the hard disk itself to read and write anyway.

If you check around real world tests you'll see firewire is consistently faster than USB2, despite the quoted theoretical max bandwidth. USB was built to be cheap to implement, where as firewire is more expensive to implement, but has more sophisticated technology to allow faster transfers.

Also note I once had a MyBook World Edition, and the max i got out of it speedwise was about 5mb over the wired network, because that was all the chip in it could handle, which is pretty pathetic to say the least. Wouldn't use WD MyBooks, based on that and the numerous amazon reviews of drive failures. Shame as their desktop drives seem really good.

Eh?

USB2 is only nominally faster than FW400 at burst rate. For sustained transfers, FW is faster, particularly as USB routes all data through the cpu.

As for saturating the hard drive's bandwidth - try transferring data via FW800, eSATA or over gigabit ethernet first. Those interfaces cost more than USB2 for a reason.

Ask yourself why USB3 has been launched if USB2 is faster than disks can manange.
