Terrible reviews there on Amazon, I dislike proprietary software being required.

then just do the firmware update and remove the virtual cd. Then it acts like any other drive. Hot from me.

Aren't there 1tb and 1.5tb USB powered external drives about ?

i like WD mybooks, have 3. so it's a bit of a shock to read about the software! was all ready to buy one. but if you have to f**k around with it. to make useable. what the point. pass on this
#6
Still 100% usable. I don't use the software *at all*. I just ignore it. :P The best external hard drive I have, great price too!

I have this and think the reviews are un-just.

Mine has worked for well over a year no problems linked up to my PC and has worked hard during that time.

You get 1.81TB of actual hard drive, which should be enough for anyone and the software is fine. A neat aspect is it will automatically go into standby mode if no accessed for around 20 minutes or something, but will still stay visible on your PC and can be accssed again fully within 5 seconds.

I think it's great, really don't see what all the negative is about and I'm quite fussy about computer equipment.

7200 rpm... thought most 2TB where 5400 (most) or 5900 (Seagate) rpm green drvies. Wonder whats in this bad boy?

Proprietary software... *spit!*. Least u can get rid of it but should be there in the first place. Wonder if its like some of the other USB drives with Proprietary software where the firmware does infact get rid of the virtual CD but you dont get the space back.

Button at top didnt work for me, correct link here:

or you can have the elements version here: (Same price)

I kind of already posted this here :
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/western-digital-wdbacw0020hbk-2tb-usb-3-0-2-0-mybook-essentials-desktop-hard-dri/933156/#post11220660

But I concede that the deal I was posting was for the faster version and I merely pointed out that Amazon were doing this one for £69.99...

Either way it just shows how fickle the HUKD crowd are when you post a decent deal. I'd still personally opt for the USB 3.0 model as its just over a tenner more and there's also cashback to be had but I guess to each his own.

What's the difference between this WD My Book Essential and the Western Digital Elements 2 TB? They're the same price.

Good question. Is it just the case?
#14
Both are 7200 rpm... so would guess it is just the case.
#15
USB 3.0 version here for an extra £12 if it's important to anybody.

Good find OP - note though that if your on a tighter budget, then there is a WD Elements 1.5TB USB 2.0 External 3.5" Hard Disk available from Amazon UK at £47.89 including free delivery.

It's gone up in price by a couple of pounds since it was previously posted as a deal over two weeks ago (it's listed as expired) - listed below is the embedded link to it on Amazon UK.

Amazon UK - £47.89p - Western Digital Elements 1.5TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive

Great price on the MyBook. I already have three (ranging from 500MB to another 2TB one). They run well and look quite stylish too, sitting just behind the tv.

I have both and I would say the My Book is more reliable, maybe because of the case? The Elements one doesn't come with the software (doesn't really matter if you just ignore the software anyway).

I posted a Buffalo 2TB External drive cheaper over here (£64.26) without the need for any proprietary software :

At least you are honest about your reasons for a 2TB storage device ;-)

.

No, you didn't 'kind of' post it already. When I first look at a deal I search three core things. Product, price and merchant. As all three things were different in your POST (not the description) I overlooked it.
Also, many people (me included) do not have the use for USB 3 at the moment. I would never buy an external drive to be future proof as by the time I get round to getting USB 3 2TB will probably cost 30-40 pound.
Finally, perhaps people are not voting positively on your deal due to the rather aggressive and insulting tone you use. You catch more flies with honey rather than vinegar....

#24
In case it makes any odds here..

If this is similar to WD's 2.5 inch drives with inbuilt Smartware firmware..

If you are planning on taking this to your work where you do not have admin rights, you will almost certainly HAVE to remove the partition or else you won't be able to use this on any PC which doesn't have the WD drivers installed - which almost certainly won't be done by your desktop admin.

With the Smartware partition disabled, when you do plug it in, you'll still get warned about needing admin rights. However, you can cancel the warning - but it's still annoying.

Suffice to say WDs with Smartware were put squarely on the "do not buy - EVER" list at our workplace.

I have used both and found that the My Book stayed cooler when in use. Also, the lights on the front indicate used capacity i.e. one bar for 0-25%. four bars for 75-100% used.

Oh yeah, that is a point; they show you on the taskbar what the temperature is like on the MyBook one which is very useful. Even with the software stuff, I'd get this over the Essential one.

I have to re-illiterate, this is a great price. I got it for about ~£90 on Best Buy a few months ago, £7.50 quidco but only came with a 2-pin plug so Best Buy refunded me with £10. I had to take it back but Best Buy is a terrible company and had to take it back to WD themselves. In fact, I called Best Buy up and an English guy asked me how to spell 'Western Digital'. :|

I think I've missed this deal. The Amazon link goes to a £90 product now from marketplace seller. Amazon is selling these at the same price, but shipping in 1-3 months!
And the Dixons link... well, that's also no longer in stock. :(
Please tell me I'm wrong!
