Now then, am I right in thinking you have to install propriety software on your PC with WD drives...making them pretty useless for taking to work with you where you increasingly need admin rights to install anything on your work PC?

...otherwise, great price!

There are work arounds with the software. But would you really take a powered external drive to work? a portable maybe....

Hi

To use the drive you do not need to install software for it as just appears in My Computer, to use some of the features such as autoback up etc then yes you do need to install the software.

I have this drive and like it alot and tempted to buy a 2nd

I take it USB 3.0 is backwards compatible? Going to be using it with a Macbook Pro
#17
yea it is, you will be limited by the speed of the older port obviously.
#18
...actually, was thinking about one of these to put my increasingly large music collection on and to run iTunes directly from it... ...rom home this would be great (...so still might get it) but for work, although the problem of installing software doesn't look like being a problem, I'd still need admin rights to alter the default iTunes folder...bleedin' admin rights, they're such a pain!!!
#19
Great drive i have 3 of them and now 2 more on the way ...god i hate this site.! :)
#20
Boohoo me want a silver one to go wiv me mac lol!
#21
What with it being the same price at Dixon's, would that suggest that it will be staying at this sort of price level for a while?

Yes you would benefit, if your laptop had a ExpressCard 34 slot! It's pretty much a hot swapable PCI card. If it doesn't have this port, your buying a door stop! :{

Your usb2 drive will always be usb2 speeds! (better throughput using this 3.0/2.0 card than a 'standard' USB 2 port on your lappy though)

Good price for USB 3.0 2TB drive but shame it has glossy than matt finish. Would much prefer matt. Another fingerprint/dust magnet item.

Couple of questions if anyone can answer please:
I have a 3 year old decent spec PC but only USB 2, do I just buy a USB 3 thingy or do they need to be compatible with the motherboard/PC?
Will this work with the WDTV HD media player?
thanks

What sort of speeds should we expect using the transcend card compared to a laptop with a usb 3 port?

Looks like with a quantity from the orders then Amazon negotiates with WDC for a deal. If negotiation failed as it did last time then Amazon cancel all the orders as it happened to me last time with my WDC Elements order. However re-negotiation happens all the time. After I ordered from Pixmania at a cheaper price, luckily, then the Amazon same deal on the WDC Elements came back again even though there was no stock and cancellation only a couple of weeks before!
