is this the one with digital music rights that wont let you share any media be aware that WD are selling HDD with this so may not do what you want it to.
#3
I just want to use this drive as storage for my photos and High Def video so I'm assuming it will be fine for that
#4
I was well pissed when I bought the USB only version instead of this. They're the same price!

Quick grab these, these are worth it.

BTW one Amazon reviewer says theres 3 years warranty. Can someone confirm this?
My USB only WD 1TB drive only came with 1 year warranty.

I'm still kicking myself.

Warranty is 5 years according to the Western Digital site.

Anyone know if these contain the newer western digital green power drives ?
#6
According to the WD mini-site these are the new "greener" drives
I've already got an older 250Gig WD USB My Book drive and I've been very happy with it but with the faster firewire and eSATA connections its a sure fire winner

hmm..... what do i get for my macbook this for a 500gb time capsule for £180?
#8
and remember the time capsule transfer rates are going to be pedestrian by comparision -I know which storage solution my Macs will be connected to.

Not sure if this is the one but if its is AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE - you cant save anything with an avi, mp3 or media file extension - madness!

WD's list of banned file types encompasses over 35 extensions. This includes AAC, MP3, AVI, DivX, WMV, and QuickTime files. And - why not? — Windows TMP files too.
The storage device is billed as a "surprisingly simple and secure way to access and share data and photos" using your home or office network. And technically that's true — namely, the "way" in question is not letting you do it. Abstinence is simple and secure. You've got to hand it to Western Digital.
If you must have the drive, you could work around the crippled WD Anywhere Access client app. Or be satisfied sharing your impressive collection of .doc files. But this is — supposedly — a remote access hard drive.
So what's the point if WD is going to use a shotgun feature killing technique and assume there isn't a legitimate and legal reason to share an AVI file? (Hello, digital camera).

Although there does seem to be a workaround...

That was their NAS drives. It was the Western Digital AccessAnywhere software which was blocking the files and it not actually required to access the drive as normal network shares were unrestricted.

No this is not the external WD drive with the DRM restrictions on it

This is the My Book STUDIO edition - (Formatted for Mac and with firewire, eSata and USB connections on it)

The DRM issues are connected to the My Book WORLD edition which has an ethernet connection on it and with which people have been sharing all kinds of media on over the web.

You'll be fine with this drive and avi, mp3, wmv etc. files

That is false. Its an external hard drive like any other. The DRM thing you are talking about is the bundled file sharing application allowing you to access your home files from work, for example. Just don't use it and if you need to access files at home use an alternative.

What makes you laugh is all people would have to do to get round this is rename a "wmv" file to "doc" and it would be allowed....

Will they ever learn!?
