Hi OP: How do you use these? Do you have to have an existing CCTV system? Does it go into any system? Do you just connect camera's directly to it? (Probably very stupid questions; but I have been meaning to set up something for ages and don't know where to start - your post got me interested again...)

Lol, probably the WD Blacks. However these ones are made for constant recording thus CCTV use.

This is just a HDD to store the recorded footage. It will need to be installed inside a CCTV recorder (DVR), the cameras then connect to the DVR.

Whoa whoa whoa, hold on a second. So these don't have a surveillance camera built in them? Useless...

I read somewhere that the surveillance HD is setup to constantly write with disregard to small data loss writes and error correction/verification.

OK for CCTV where you might get a split second blip on the screen for a bad write but not good for files. Don't know if its true
