Cheap as chips !!
From the Amazon blurb:
WD Red hard drives are designed and tested for compatibility in the unique 24x7 operating environment and demanding system requirements of home and small office NAS.
Western Digital claims that these tweaks result in a 35 per cent MTBF (mean time between failures) improvement over standard desktop drives, and is quick to point out that the optimisation ultimately reduces the long-term cost of NAS ownership

How is this cheap as chips when you can get a 3TB USB 3.0 drive for £14 cheaper?http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/verbatim-3tb-store-n-save-usb3-external-drive-75-99-pixmania-1759440
Good point mate. Also, this toaster is even cheaper still: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/essentials-russell-hobbs-4-slice-toaster-brand-new-14-99-delivered-argos-ebay-outlet-1812551

No way can a 24/7 rated 3TB drive with a 3 year warranty be regarded as good value at £90 when you can get a 4 slice toaster for under 15 notes.

I'm tempted to cancel my WD Red order for this toaster.

Bought one a few days ago, so try and get on amazon's chat thing. I just got this back so thanks. As tesco would say... every little helps.

Me:Price lower than 5 days ago, Could I possibly get a refund on the difference? Instead of returning as unwanted and then buying from yourselves again? Thank you
Amazon:Hello, My name is XXXX. I will be happy to help you.
Could you help me with the order number please?
Me:XXX-XXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXX
Amazon:Thank you, could you please be on hold while I check the details for you?
Me:Sure, no problem
Amazon:Thanks for waiting.
I've issued a refund for the difference in price for you.
Refund Total: £4.13
Is this okay?
Me:Thank you very much. Much appreciated.

Great price.

Spotted this earlier as I compared the Overclockers one. Overclockers make it pretty complicated to see how to get free delivery from forum membership so went with this one.
#3
typical bought two on Friday for £97 each...great price today though...

This or the new WD Green 3TB?
#5
Not best rating.... but ofcourse that is the reason its cheaper...

Bought and heat added.
My Proliant will be happy.

Red 3TB is better than Green 3TB (certainly in a NAS).
The Red has a 3yr WD warranty. The Green is less.....one maybe two years?
For an extra fiver it's a no-brainer.

Cheerz OP.

Thanks OP! :) Been waiting for Amazon to drop to this price, already got one from Overclockers the other week for the same price, now just need somewhere like Scan to drop to the same price to pick up a third for the new NAS build :)

@popoyaya also factor in the fact the wd red has 3 year warranty, compared to a 2 year warranty on product you are posting. also usb 3.0 compared to internal drive is slower. need I go on

Very good price. :)
Have a WD remote hard drive already and has never missed a beat.

You're lucky to be able to afford both.
It saves you from the difficult choice of which to buy

If I put the toaster in a 5.25 drive bay, can anyone suggest suitable cooling solutions?

Brown bread keeps the toaster from setting on fire.

OEM - Does this mean it doesnt have a 3 year warranty?

If you don't want another toaster, there is always the Seagate 3terrabyte (cased) hard drive on ebay (from Currys/pc world)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131053727971

For 84.99, I've been happy with my seagates

Or even cheaper from Dabs outlet 3 tb Samsungs (cased) for £79.96

As far as I am aware you would register the product with Western Digital to receive the [standard for Red] 3 year warranty.

It only comes with a 12 month warranty. (OEM)
Its £102.21 with a 3yr warranty.
I don't know if its worth paying to get the 3yr warranty?

If when mine arrives, and the WD warranty checker doesn't say 3 years it's going back, simples. I'm pretty sure the other posts I've seen on this have suggested 1 year with Amazon, then the next two years with WD direct.

This page on the WD site says that WD Reds, bought in Europe, have a 3 year warranty:

Warranty Policies

But I agree with mikedigitales - if it aint got 3 years, it aint staying !

The £102 model with extended warranty is 4 years (3+1 extra).

This doesn't prove that the OEM version is 3 years but i am lead to believe that all Red drives have atleast 3 years?

Just did the same!

Makes the Synology and these drives even more of a bargain (seriously if you're looking at NAS the 213j is quite frankly outstanding value for money...

Overclockers (who Amazon are price matching) lists three years warranty on the OEM RED drives...
#34
Whether you're using them for NAS or not, I prefer the Reds over the Greens. The extra year warranty and quieter running are big pluses. Only potential down is the shorter time limited error recovery, that's not a biggie.

Sorry probably a silly question but can you use them normally in a standard desktop if not using them for Nas. Just need to have more hard drive space and thinking of a wd drive due to warranty and reliability. What connections are they (Sata)

They are sold as a NAS drive but will run fine in a normal desktop situation.
Sata connection.
