This little box is up there with one of my best electronic buys ever. Hook it up to a HDD or your PC and watch all your content on your main TV.

It plays pretty much every media filetype (not realvideo) with no problems and has recently been updated to play ISO (DVD Images)

It connects to YouTube also and there has been an official firmware update launched yesterday which also lets you use Facebook/Deezer/Flingo/Accuweather.

There is also a strong community of modifiers and an awesome unofficial firmware you can put on it called WDLXTV live. This lets you use the box to connect to Apple Trailers, Shoutcast radio, BBC pocasts and get YouTube in HD.

You can also customise the look and feel easily to have 'moviesheets' that make the whole experience much sexier.

At under £80, this is a steal.

There is a WDTV Live Plus, currently the only significant advantage is Netflix, and a WDTV Live Hub which has a built in 1TB HDD but currently is little hope of advanced customisation.

Example of moviesheets that can be used on WDLXTV live firmware. Sexiness!

I've already got the WD TV (none live version), is there enough difference to make upgrading worth while ?
#6
Good spot, did a search but cos it was expired it never showed up in searches.

With regards to haing the non live version, It really depends on a couple of things, one is if you have Gen1 or Gen2, Gen1 doesn't down convert DTS audio (popular in mkv) so if you are trying to use audio through TV stereo speakers you will get no sound.

Another thing to consider is the ease of use of transfering files to the HDD ocnnected to the WDTV Live from PC across the network or streaming to/from other PC's (eg I can use laptop in bed and stream anything from my 1TB HDD connected to my WDTV)

Lastly it's the value added features of YouTube, Flickr, and now Facebook, Deezer and Flingo (Not used last three myself yet to give an opinion)

Absolutely. I had the original WDTV and now have the Live. The biggest thing for me is the ability to pull content straight from the house network. With the WDTV, I originally used usb sticks, then moved to usb drives, then with the Live, went to the house Network using my Zyxel PLA-401 home network boxes. To have all of your content available at a key press far outweighs have to disconnect the usb drive constantly to add content to it.

In addition, there is third party firmware available at...

which expands the capabilities considerably.

Check out the other thread on this model.....

Unexpire please, and the link above for unofficial firmware you have to register for the forum. Do it, It's worth it but here's another forum where registration isn't initially required: http://forum.wdlxtv.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2053

Beats me how that got hot but the AC RYAN didnt at 70.00, people have no idea what they are doing or talking about, the AC RYAN can do so much more, they have more firmware updates, and its an amazing quality piece of kit.
Everyone that reviewed the media streamers, and I mean everyone, liked the AC RYAN better

Not to get into a flameware, more for my own curiousity, what makes the AC Ryan better than the WDTV Live? As for firmware updates, The WDTV Live has had 2 official updates in the last 2 weeks, never mind the many unofficial updates.

Possible cheaper option is from Dell @ 82.99 with 10% cashback (e.g. Quidco) for a total £74.69.

edit: review may be for larger version, not the mini? appreciate it may not be a directly fair comparison.
