We're Going on a Bear Hunt (Walker story board books) (Board book) rrp £4 - £2.40 at Amazon

Brilliant book

When Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury's family go on a bear hunt, they are full of the bravado and confidence that the knowledge of failure brings:

We're going on a bear hunt,
We're going to catch a big one.
What a beautiful day!
We're not scared.

Caves, mud, rivers, forest whatever obstacles the family encounters, they overcome with reassuring ease. But when their quest is successful, they decide bear hunts are not to be repeated.

Chunkily manageable for little hands, repetition of the "We can't go over it. / We can't go under it. / Oh no! / We've got to go through it" kind, and frequent onomatopoeia ("Swishy Swashy Splash Splosh Hoooo Woooo") will maintain interest for even the youngest of listeners.

Sticking a pig (in the Lord of the Flies sense) is more fun

It is not as if Whinnie the Pooh is a good role model in these days of increasing childhood obesity.

And as for Toad, I think RoSPA might have a few things to say.

there's a video of the author reading it on youtube... very scary looking bloke. i'd sooner run away from him than the bear!

"When Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury's family go on a bear hunt, they are full of the bravado and confidence that the knowledge of failure brings."

What a bizarre assertion. How does the knowledge of failure encourage bravado? And later on it says they are successful. Bet Michael Rosen didn't write that blurb.

Great book. Lovely to read aloud. Seeing this makes me miss reading to my kids at night... but they're a bit older now and more into hunting the sort of creatures found in Bioshock and AvP.

"We're going on an alien hunt... eeek eeek blam blam squelch gargle..."

Bear hunting could be dangerous for the BEARS too! They generally end up with their heads stuck on a wall.

Not to worry, last time I checked, bears were quite noticable by their absence in the UK. I don't think either the kids or the bears will come to any harm through reading this book.

What about the ones WE read as kids? "Little Red Riding Hood" has been scaring the bejayzus out of kids for generations and none of them came to a nasty end. :-D

Damn good memories of this book.

When I was about 4, 5 and 6 the class used to get read this book as a treat. No matter how many times I heard it, it was quality ;-)

Read this book recently and was thoroughly unimpressed after the hype I had heard. I think I may have missed something? ...Or it may just be like Marmite (which I love BTW)!

...Good price though.

parts of the graphics have been ripped off a medical website!
