Are these suitable for Windows XP withour reformatting (spec refers to Mac) amd is a little garbled on the website ?

Software IncludedDrivers & UtilitiesOS RequiredWindows® 2000/XP/Vista™
Available USB port
Mac® OS X 10.4.8+ Peripheral / Interface DevicesCD-ROMSystem Requirements DetailsIntel Pentium III / AMD Duron 900 MHz or higher, 256 MB RAM (Vista: 512 MB RAM) or higher, CD-ROM drive, available USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 port, Windows 2000 / XP / Vista
MAC : PowerPC G3/G4/G5, Power Book G3/G4 or Intel Mac, 256 MB RAM or higher, CD-ROM drive, available USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 port, Mac OS X v10.3 or higher

What is the general consensus on reliability etc ?

To naswer my own 1st question, I found this on a review "The drive ships with two data cables (FireWire 400 and USB 2.0), a quick setup poster, and a velour string purse. The drive is bus-powered. You just have to plug it into a Mac and it works. Preformatted for OS X, the My Passport Studio needs to be reformatted for use with Windows. This is a very simple process that requires a few mouse clicks using Windows' built-in disk-management utility."

Has anyone re-formatted for XP and is it really that easy ?

not really sure about the reformatting part to be honest, but Novatech do have live chat on the website, however im sure there suitable with xp

and about the reliability, you get 5 years warranty, rather than the normal 2 or 3 years, ive also heard good things about western digital though reviews

Link to wrong product. The one on offer is 250GB with firewire 400, not 800

Still a good product, though !

you could get 320GB for another £11 on Amazon - that would be a better deal imo.

Have you got a link ? I cannot see the Mac version on their for this price ?

The Tesco deal is a bit better than this (320GB for £44) although I don't think that is currently on offer. Might be worth waiting :-D
They do still have the £65 500GB drives though..

This is still a good price though.

Could you provide a link to the £65 500GB one please? I've tried to find a USB powered one at that price on Tesco Direct but to no avail so I guess I am looking in the wrong place.

As 'shedloads' said. Instore only :-)

I just wish I had a spare £65 myself! Told another guy at work about the deal and he picked one up from our local, Salisbury. :x lol

I would check it out but I would think it is only in larger stores... I don't recall seeing anything like that in my local Tesco. Will have a look though. Have a Western HD TV coming

The Tesco £65 500GB is instore only. In my local store they were marked up at £109 but scanned at £64.97. Tesco seem to be changing ranges and selling off stock ay 50% mark downs, Some great gardening deals as well.

IWhat make is that? WD? or Iomega?
So I know what I'm looking for, next time I'm in Tescos.

Chaps it must be remembered that this is not the 'essential' version but the superior 'studio' model that includes firewire, which make this drive a little hotter than the others that are been linked to.

what?

Mac's can't use any USB HDD - if true, that's just stupid.

anyway - the links have already been posted by other members above.

i'm not making sense - look at the comment i've quoted in my previous post

"CFLEETWOOD" said:

saying that would mean that Mac's need specialized HDD's, would it not?

the mac versions come with firewire and usb, firewire is far faster, and will also come preformatted for mac, but that doesn't matter so much as the firewire, which on a mac is a far better choice for external harddrive than usb.

windows firewire support is, to be frank, flaky, especially on vista.

Passport Studio is "the mac version", and the current 320GB Firewire 800 model is around £100 on Amazon. £40 for a 5-year warranty 250GB Firewire 400 model is not bad at all compared to these usb-only Essential models that still cost £50 or more. Don't mix Passport Studio, Essential, or Elite. They may work on both PC and Mac, but the prices/speed/warranty vary greatly. :whistling:

Am I missing something here? The OP is about a USB powered 2.5" drive... and this link is to a 3.5" mains powered drive.

Nice drive.
