Product Description
As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. WD Caviar Green drives make it possible for energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation.

* Reduced power consumption - WD has reduced power consumption by up to 40 percent compared to standard desktop drives with the combination of WD's IntelliSeek, NoTouch, and IntelliPower technologies.
* Helps enable eco-friendly PCs - WD Caviar Green drives yield an average drive power savings of 4-5 watts over standard desktop drives making it possible for our energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation.
* Cool and quiet - GreenPower technology yields lower operating temperatures for increased reliability and low acoustics for ultra-quiet PCs and external drives.
* Massive capacity - Capacities up to 2 TB offer the most available capacity for storage-intensive programs and space-hungry operating systems, like Window Vista®, with plenty of room left over for photos, music, and video.
* Perfect for external drives - External drive manufacturers can eliminate the need for a fan in a high-capacity product with a WD Caviar Green drive, the coolest and quietest in its class.
* IntelliPower - A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance.
* IntelliSeek - Calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise, and vibration.
* NoTouch ramp load technology - The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.
* Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) - Employs PMR technology to achieve even greater areal density.
* StableTrac - The motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking, during read and write operations. (2 TB models only)
* Low power spin-up - WD Caviar Green drives consume less current during startup allowing lower peak loads.
* Advanced power technology - Electronic components deliver best-in-class low power consumption for reduced power requirements and increased reliability.
* Ideal For - Environmentally friendly PCs and external storage requiring lower power consumption and cool, quiet operation.

This is a 5400RPM drive but is much faster than "older" 7200rpm based drives ( think 300gb and under )

Seems like a good deal to me. Voted hot.
#2
The cheapest price I can find.
#3
voted hot, great price, ordered two...heat added...Thanks OP That's topped me up to 20TB now...nice!!!!!
#4
Just about to post this one up too. I'd bought a seagate 2TB for the same price about a month ago, and have suffered the dreaded clicking/pausing problems with it ever since.
I really really wished I'd waited for the WD one!

Some people have complained that 32MB cache is a little small for a 2TB drive so if you want better performance you may want to consider the 64MB version - WD20EARS.

If you google shop you will find it for less than £10 more, although I have not checked stock levels everywhere.

Besides all that, this drive at this price is hot.
#9
WOW!! Hopefully it wont be long until external drives are at this price!

I am sick to ****ing death of all this green ********.

"Uses 5w less power" . Whoop do ****ing whoop. These same people sell 300w graphics cards, 1kw PSUs and probably send the thing in a box stuffed with bubble wrap.

If you want to be green, stick with what you've got, be nice to nature and walk a bit more often.

"Oh yes Bethany, you know, since I saved 5 watts of power on my porn-stash drive, I can feel sooooo much better about polar bears. Another cup of fairtrade dahjeeling?"

When the last of the glaciers melt and the polar bears are homeless is it okay for them to come and live at your place? You don’t seem to be concerned about your electricity bill so you can install air conditioning to keep the place nice and cold for the bears.
#12
BTW The 32MB version in the OP is the WD20EADS so easy to confuse the 2, as I just did.
#13
Worth mentioning the 3 year warranty....

5w of power will make a pathetic difference, grow up. They did provide other ways to save energy rather than by buying this hard drive.

Slow drive but good price. Not voting.

Surely saving 5w and walking a bit more is better than just walking a bit more, every little helps. Also think of the impact it would have if everyone saved 5w of energy each day.

I wouldn't upgrade to these drives just to be 'green' as the environmental cost of producing it is far more than sticking with what you have got, even if it is less efficient. This has been proven for a variety of things such as LCD screens and even new cars. Although it is obviously still a good thing to make products greener.

lol

Do people still believe this green guilt-trip BS about glaciers melting?
#19
Without being pedantic i was not aware western digital made PSUs or graphics cards?
#20
Voted hot. In terms of price / Gb it's about the same as the Samsung HD154UI, except with a faster spin speed.
#21
Cheap as chips... 5p per GB can't be sniffed at!
#22
it's not just the electricity it uses, it's the waste heat too - 5W saved also means you can use a smaller PC case with less fans, especially if you're using a fan-less atom-based motherboard... but as people said, it's part of an overall energy saving strategy, it's no good leaving your PC on all the time unnecessarily at 200W because you think you're saving 5W on the hard drive!

it's worth noting that the power consumption of these drives varies a lot according to how busy they are - they are very frugal when idle and will even slow down, so ideal for things like DVRs and media PCs which usually have to be left on 24x7, but their peak power consumption is much higher
#23
Fortunately for XP owners this appears NOT to be a 4096 byte hard sector model (WDxxEARS or WDxxxxAARS)
This may actually explain it's slowness

It's a good deal but i won't be buying as i like peace of mind so always go for the Black drives, but this is a very good deal for 2TB IMO.

Err, they ARE melting, whatever the root cause. Don't mistake the well publicised and debunked UN Climate Panel report on the Himalayan Glaciers vanishing by 2035 with the overall global trend. It's easy to be dismissive rather than research all the facts.

Back on topic, great price and less power consumption means a cooler drive which is a happier drive.

Good price. Heat added

great price:) Only bad thing about this drive is that you get around 70mb/sec write speed compared to 100mb/sec ish with seagate's green drives. I've got 1 of each, just wish it was faster at this:(

bought

This sounds perfect to add to my peddle powered dynamo computer!

I like glaciers!

5w of power will make a pathetic difference.

The philosophy is to save 5W wherever you can and watch it add up. If every person could save 5W on 5 to 10 devices that would add up to a phenomenal saving considering the billions of people on the planet. Comprende!

hot.

the green movement is flawed. humans are the problem :) please continue to eat, p*** and s*** the planet.

I got the Samsung F2s for my readynas, and they're a bit noisy, and are 5400rpm so slower than these..
3Tb for £150

All much of a muchness on price.

:lazy:

I hate polar bears, therefore I will not be buying this drive and buying a much more energy hungry one instead.
