I'm waiting for the 250gb essential edition to go back to the previous £58.99 price as there are 10% off vouchers floating around. Currently at 69.99 so quite a difference.

Isnt there a difference between the ble light and green light? One on amazon has a green light. I think it might not have fire wire - not sure though

this is the one that is with the blue light and shows upat £116

The Essential (USB2 only) has a green light the Premium (USB2 & Firewire) has blue. HTH

Green = Essential edition (no firewire and no backup software)
Blue = Premium edition (2x firewire, backup software, drive usage indicator on blue light)

My PC has only got USB 1, would a drive like this be horrendously slow to read and write to using that?

Not only to this drive to any drive USB 1 or 1.1 is slow - depending on how much data you need to move. Any idea how much? I playback movies and edit video from these drives over firewire without a proble.

Funnily enough PC World had some green Essential's in before Christmas that had backup software. Had me confused for a minute.

That's the Essential not Premium.

OK I stand corrected. Sorry for the COLD vote.

Can I use one of these between two PCs, one connect via firewire and one USB?

I don't believe so but if you email Western Digital they usually reply in 24 hrs.

If you want an alternative Amazon have the My Book Pro Gigabit NAS for £136. I have one on order.

What backup software do they come with? The spec on Amazon states:
Software Included: Google Toolbar, Google Desktop, Google Picasa

TIA

EDIT: found it, sorry. http://www.wdmybook.com/en/overview/wdbackup.asp

yup, usb2 is slow enough (for me, i'm fussy) but usb1 would be really slooooooow, like taking literally hours to write a few gigs.

you could buy a firewire card for about a tenner i expect.

Do you have a link for this? I can't seem to find it..?

The NAS drive is on but showing as not being available for 4 to 6 weeks unfortunately, which is amazon speak for who knows if they're ever getting it.

Which is a real shame as I wouldn't mind one of those at that price, my first 500 gig drive is now nearly full

This is part of the Pro range so it may have a larger cache 16Mb vs 8Mb and a 3 year warranty but otherwise its just down to speed as you say.

Seems a good offer 500GB is a LOT of space!!!

None near me though :-(

Would this be able to store my mp3 collection on, and then play through my 360?

Got over 700 albums in my collection, currently all stored on my Sony NW3 Walkman, just thought a HD for mp3s and photos would be good.
#26
Just checked 'track order' in jessops and it says 0 processed 1 on back order!!!
#27
i wonder if i should get this or wait until the e-sata version comes out. Good deal though

I used the 10% for collect in store - my account now has a pending order at the OP price so I'm hoping that's the price I'll pay instore when I collect. (I'll be taking a print-out of the page with me just to make sure) - not sure that quidco's gonna work tho'...
