http://cpwebstore.com/500GB-2.5-USB-DriveSilver/M/B001G8Z3E8.htm would that be a cheaper version, plus the price is mainly for the colour you can get better drives for less

You're joking, right? $199 equates to about £138 these days. It's been a while since the pound was worth $2.

I think people are voting cold because you can get the Samsung HM500Li for about £90 these days, and the Passport enclosure is not worth £20 of anyone's money.

Amazon were doing the 500GB Buffalo drive for £100 for a while.

So what? This thread is about the Western Digital 500GB My Passport Essential Portable Hard Drive and is not a general portable hard drive thread. Not that your post would be any help anyway as it is so vague.

Not sure it's worth the money but this seems like a good price for this model.

Voted hot.

Here you go:

WD 500GB 2.5" Laptop drive £91 delivered. This comes with the full 8MB cache. The Passport drives typically have a cut-down version of the WD drives with only 2MB of cache. Buy the USB enclosure of your choice - should not cost more than £10 and you have already saved £20 with a better drive to boot.

I'm sorry, I didn't realise this was a fashion site where the label mattered. This is the essential's edition which as far as I'm aware doesn't have any unusual features. My post was intended to point out that 500GB 2.5" USB external drives have been availible much cheaper than this so this wasn't a good deal in general even if there didn't happen to be any cheaper right now. If you're interested in the deal somebody has now posted it up here: http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/280627/buffalo-ministation-turbousb-500gb-/

Yes, but they're desktop ones which are five times the weight and require a seperate mains adapter so they're not the same thing.

This thread deal would of been of greater success if you had added clearly that this is a 2.5" USb bus powered device, and not a 3.5" desktop drive requiring a seperate power supply. Nevermind :)
