hahaha keyring, wireless, connect it to your TV.

Where are they getting these specs from?
#4
does anyone have any more info on the wireless side of this? can't seem to find much info, does it authenticate against your wifi router? it doesn't mention any speeds etc...and has no Ethernet connection either...seems weird..

There isn't. It's USB only. No wireless, no keychain, no ethernet, no tv connectivity.

It's just a plain old 640GB USB external hard drive.

yup. still a reasonably priced one at that

WESTERN DIGITAL DD3 5 640 EL UK (Product code 532479)

I've been looking for a external hard-drive with a key ring attachemnt for a while so I was pleased to see this product on your site, but don't know how to use the wireless feature or plug it in to my TV. Can you explain?

Thanks

Still, might get one anyway.

Just to confirm. Is this powered 'only' by the USB port? i.e. no external power ...
#16
this is a hot price! should have the AAKS series by western digital inside, one of the best performers out there at the moment but it could also have the newer green or blue series

anyhow via USB you will never stress the HDD, it will work at about 60-70% speed of what it can acutally achieve! will make its life longer

i would buy one now!!!

Being a 3.5" drive [desktop PC type] it's mains powered - you can see the mains connection on the website pics.

Only 2.5" drives [laptop type] are USB powered.

Its no cheaper than any other external HDD this is not hot Scan have a 640 maxtor (owned by seagate now) on today only for the same price and there customer support is the best I've ever had 2 failed seagate hard drives i created a RMA online posted them the day they received them they sent the replacements no questions asked.

640GB storage capacity
USB connection
3.5inches size
1kg weight
Keyring attachment Hows that work?
External drive
Grey Colour Looks black
Backup software
Windows Vista compatible
Portable Hard Drive 3.5inch mains powered is not portable
Plug in to your TV Wheres the output and how would that work you would need a version of Linux to run that
Wireless Access I noticed the wifi aerials

are the people that do comets website retarded

Had mine fail on me (head crash) after only a 30Cm drop, (wasn't reading or writing at the time) so a bit miffed, have dropped drives before one of which was writing at the time and are still in use...
I know I am to blaim but won't be going WD again and I'll be sourcing one with a inbuilt freefall sensor (dock's head under certain acceleration) to avoid such a problem again.

I think Comet need to be taught a lesson, the amount of incorrect descriptions they have on the specifications page for many goods, should be complaints under trade descriptions for each and every one of them.

That dosent prove anything, for a 640gb this is a great deal.

surely it proves that on a 'per gb' basis this is more expensive than the examples quoted?

Can I just add that my TV has a USB socket, and I can actually connect a USB HDD to it and view images. Whilst Comet are being slightly optimistic [ie not everyone's TV will offer a USB port] it is in fact technically correct - albeit in a rather 'expanding on the truth' way ;)

Just picked one up via reserve and collect

Just to confirm

I got

The WD Elements 640GB..Was £49.99..Comes with an AC ADAPTER and USB Cable

Comes preformatted in FAT format...shows up as596GB
#27
the onyl downside...2 years warranty instead of 3 as per the normal internal drives...because the USB controller on the enclosure fails quicker than the actual HDD

i had a seagate 300gb external, the usb&firewire controller in the box failed, cracked it open, took the hard drive it's working brilliantly inside my comp now...so if anyone had that it's worth checking the hard drive might still be alive

comet have the same customer service as everyone else, if the drive fails within a certain period just after you bought it they will replace it, if it fails in the first year you can take it back in store, after a year WD deal with the warranty

you can check that in Control Panel -> Device Manager -> from the list Disk Drives

would be of great help!

No it isn't wireless.

This is USB Connection..AC powered

Wireless hard drives (external) do exist..You just pay a little premium for it

....Better of getting a NAS and attach it to your router..be alot cheaper :)
#33
umm,, Thankss

I'll probably just get a normal USB hard drive and make do without it being on the network.

Anyways thanks again bud

Comet finally replied (24 hrs late, but never mind):

I can advise that the Western Digital DD3 5 640 EL UK does not have the key ring attachment and our website is currently being updated.

However, I can confirm that to connect the unit to a television, the television would require a USB port.

I have requested further information from products team with regards to the wireless feature and will be in contact with your again shortly

So like "czrsiNk "said you can hook it up to your TV, though it sounds more like a TV feature than a HD feature.
