Almost decided to go with the Samsung S2 1TB, but did a bit of searching around and found this WD drive to be cheaper (and I believe they are more reliable).

Note that this is the 2.5" portable drive and does not require an external power supply.

*Price dropped to 69.99 from 72.99

I've been torn between this and the Samsung S2 myself also - this looks to edge it - hot from me

Will this work in a PS3?

You can almost lay money on the fact that someone will ask this.
#5
yeah but watch out for the flaky bespoke usb connector on the WD one.
#6
hot was £90 in pc world last weekend
#7
I was only asking as it seems to match the required specs with it being 2.5 and 5400rpm but last i knew was Sony capped the PS3 at 500GB so i was just wondering if this has changed yet as my 250gb is down to it's last 20Gb

Ihave the 500gb version and unlike my previous elements hdd it doesnt have a seperate usb board connected to it but the micro usb port in this hdd is part of the hard drives circuit board so i dont think it can be used elsewhere.
Would love it if it is possible to use elsewhere as i want to use it inside my laptop so any help would be great !

The Samsung S2 1tb is £73.98. I don't suppose there is much between the two.

The samsung comes with a leather pouch - does this edge the Samsung over the WD lol...?

The PS3 isn't capped at 500GB. I have a 640GB hd in my PS3.
#11
Good to know Sony have increased it. When i swapped my 60gb hard drive for a 250gb a few years ago Sony were capping it at 500gb. I didn't go with a 500gb as they were expensive at that time. Hell my current hard drive cost me over £70 and now you can get them for half that.
#12
Don't forget that the 2.5" 1tb drives are 12.5mm and not the standard 9.5mm.
#13
Damn anyone got £72.99 spare :D
Very Hot!

That's a 3.5 drive that need a power supply. The offer is for a 2.5 drive that's powered through the USB.
Not really comparing like for like. . .

That is a desktop version with external power source. So why post it when it's not portable or like for like?

Is it not just a micro usb connection?
#20

I have 500g portable hd attached to sony tv, but is it ok to leave it attached, as always on?

Are there any settings in sony tv to disable (safely remove) usb drive?
#22
so will this fit in the ps3 or not?

Why? It probably contains a 3.5" drive and isn't portable!!

Isn't this better since it's USB 3.0 for a few quid more?!

This is a 2.5" portable hard disk where you can just plug and play, whereas the one you linked to is a 3.5" hard drive that requires an external power supply to power the drive.

out of interest, why is this better than this WD 2TB usb2.0 drive?

This will not fit in a ps3 slim, but will fit in a ps3 phat after you mod the drive try which involves breaking the seal.

the problem is that this is a 12.5m drive, where as the ps3 accepts a 9.5mm drive and the caddy wont accept a 12.5mm drive.

ah s**T... sorry guys, i didnt realise it was a seperately powered one. what a dumb post :(
#34
so am i correct in assuming the Samsung is the better deal, what with the reports of faulty micro-usb connections on the WD? looking to buy one of these this morning....
#35
If you dont value your data go for the Samsung - in my experience anyway.

Well... it is better if you want to spend another £50, want a 1080p HD media player, and don't want it to be pocket portable I guess...

If however what you are after is what this deal is about, (a portable 1TB 2.5" hard drive for under £75), then I'm afraid it's not 'better' :)

What I am looking for is a decent but cheap portable hard drive, so for me this deal is good, and the one you have posted is definitly not 'better'.

No offence intended, just saying.... :)

My 500mb WD portable has been working a treat so far. Does the Samsung have a bespoke usb?
#38
Looks like price is down to £69.99. Hooray for waiting a day...

Has anyone opened this up? What drive is inside?
