#5
Cheap n cheerful external storage but the PSU's have very high failure rates. WD will repace FOC so not a huge issue but will take a week or so for a replacement

Does this have the auto power-off feature of the My Books?

Hey Uridium, it's Killzoneftw from AVF. Fancy the chances of seeing you on here.:)

@ SOSAGES what do you mean when you say the PSU probably won't work out of the box?
#10
lots of complaints about the plug it comes with - mine didnt work so just used a spare 12v one i had.
#11
Recently paid a bit more to get one from Ebuyer. Typical.

In terms of performance it's pretty good, no faults with mine anyways.
I was able to watch Knight Rider from it, while transferring a lot other files on to the drive without any issues.

Won't work on my Airport Extreme though :(.

Looks like I'm limited to My Books if I want hardware based sleeping.

Been looking at the Western Digital Elements posts for awhile now and decided to bite the bullet. Ordered it this afternoon. My three year old iMac is running out of hd space and thought now is a good time as ever to buy this drive (help fight the recession and all), fingers crossed that I'll be happy with it just like the vast majority  Heat added

Cheers me dears

This model is good on the Nintendo Wii. If you know your way around homebrew, you can legally copy your games to USB which makes them run faster and easier to load and store.

If I was fighting the recession, my 3 year old wouldn't have an iMac :whistling:

Does this need an external power supply/adaptor? It's good price, wonder how it compares with WD passport in terms of size and power requirement. Will be good if it is shown with a hand holding this item to indicate how big it is..
#19
what does everyone mean when they say it doesn't auto power off? do they mean that it doesn't ever stop spinning even when not in use, sort of like never going to sleep? i had a very old 400gb version of this and now have two my books and they both for example only stayed spinning for 15 minutes or so after pausing some video but then both quickly spinned back up so i could watch it again after pressing play. so if my old 400gb version did that, i see no reason why this one wouldn't!

it's much bigger than a passport and yes it needs an external power supply, used to be a power pox half way up the lead like a laptop power cable but my two my books jst have a slightly larger than usual plug and i guess thats where all the elves/pixies do their work.

This might be it, but I would await 'expert' users input before downloading - limited OS options though?

Uses a plug as its a 3.5" drive inside.

I had one and the power adapter popped. Lucky I had a spare.
Sent it back though as it was always clicking and I had a good reason to send it back.

Yeh it will.
You will need to have it formatted FAT32. And there will be a file limit of 4gb. So not that great for hd films.

Yep it will work mate. That's what I'm getting it for too. As far as I know this drive comes pre pre-formatted as FAT32 so there is no need to format. It's basically plug and play with the PS3. As for the 4GB file size limit I just split the files and put on sequential playback on the PS3 and I'm sorted.:)
