Heat added.

I just bought the 1.5TB from eBuyer 4 hours ago when on Amazon this was £5 more expensive. Now they are roughly the same value. My day has been pretty unlucky.

Cheaper at PC World with 10% off code 10DRIVES. They are shipping out the newer model.

I meant that in a reliable way, with it being on most the of the time, i've read loads of reviews for previous bargains that they just die.

Thanks for this info. Code worked for me, £53.82 delivered (£51.17 if 5% Quidco tracks)

Which company is shipping out the newer model, Amazon or PC world? They both show different pictures.
#12
PCWorld. I bought one a day ago and it comes in the new model (i.e. the one Amazon is selling)
#13
I've read this has got a flimsy power connector and a mini-USB socket? My Freecom and Toshiba units have the same socket types, so I need only one power cord and data cable as I use only one drive at a time. Shame that this doesn't seem to be compatible.

Me again. Is the "rubberised" one the new model? Don't think it looks as nice, if that matters.

Just received mine from last deal and pleased to report it's the newer model and doesn't come with the problematic power brick of earlier Elements drives. I have a 2 year old 500GB that's on it's second power supply, so looks like they've addressed this (hopefully) by using a straightforward AC adaptor plug.

Read elsewhere about overheating problems due to the plastic case, but mine has been running all night and is still as cool as when it came out of the box, so very pleased with the drive so far and gives my poor 500GB some breathing space :)

I think it is just because of the popularity of externals that the prices have came down so much, I am hoping for portables to drop in price next

Sorry to kind of hi-jack the thread, but which is the best Bang-For-My-Buck deal? Amazon, PCWorld or somewhere else?
I'm not too worried about the capacity as long as it's a Western Digital.
What's the best value for money deal in terms of size and connection options (FireWire is nice if any drives have that these days, or just a second USB2 to daisy-chain)?

Thanks - heat and rep added. :)

I've worked in I.T. for years and Western Digital used to have a terrible reputation for disks going kaput after not very long. I don't know if they've improved at all - we stopped using them about 5-6 years ago after constant crashes and data loss on the desktops, and I doubt we'll go back to them.

I've always heard and thought the opposite - that WD were THE brand of hard drives to go for (internal and external). Guess it's all down to personal experience/preference. :)

Western Digital are reliable for internal drives, it appears that the casing used for external drives causes issues. Having said that, I have a 500GB WD model which I don't use it very often, I have never had any problems.
