Just download Synctoy from MS website. Free and ideal for backing up photos and music

Yeah I think it is preformatted to NFTS because I had to reformat mine so the PS3 would read it. You don't need any back up software really...

It is NTFS, does not come with any bloated backup software either, just a simple hard drive. I got this for 45 from tesco with a voucher, deal was on here a while ago, not sure if it has expired by now tho.

How did you format it to fat32? I tried with Swissknife and it only formatted 400GB and every time I try to format the rest in disc management it takes hours and then crashes. I have an unusable WD HDD because of this **** program

I have had 2 of these and had problems with both.

Need to take one back to currys again.....

Had no problems with 2 Hitachi's though.

Try fat32format. Its excellent and formats it in a few seconds. See this thread comment 23 for more information.

Most Western Digital HDD's are preformatted as Fat32, though not sure about elements...

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=304&sid=34&lang=en

but they have a format program available on their support site.

Mate got this same one, came FAT32 formatted.

just a technical note people should know about fat32... You cannot create a file larger than (2^32)-1 bytes (this is one byte less than 4 GB) on a FAT32 partition.
(at least not on windows xp)
hopefully this saves a few people nightmares and scratching their heads

BTW, does anyone know of a media player that can read Mac formatted HDs? I'll probably have to create a partition with Mac and FAT32 to watch movies on tele.

I got one of these from the Tesco deal and it's making grinding noises when transferring data to it.

Gunna take it back in the morning I think.:(

Bought mine for £60 on Amazon back in March, not had a single issue with it. Nice and quiet, no problems! Voting hot. Nice little thing.

Price has gone up to £53.49 now.

I picked one of these up two days ago and quickly realised it was not fat32.. after hours of searching and making it almost unreadable i found a very very nice piece of code that turns it into fat32 in seconds.. this guy sums it up nicely, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOdsO-5hK3I
