Was posted earlier but pixmania undercut it by a couple of quid, to which amazon has price matched but one pence more. Like me, would much prefer to buy from amazon.

Went over 800 degrees when price dropped to £46. Very good price for a very reliable external hard drive (read reviews on amazon).

Manufacturer's Description
WD Elements Desktop External Drive - simply affordable

Western Digital's WD Elements Desktop USB 2.0 external hard drives are the right answer for simple, reliable add-on storage. Simply plug one into a USB port and start saving your photos, music, video, and files. Designed with the same commitment to quality that made WD external drives the number one selling drives in the world, the WD Elements comes with plug-and-play simplicity, meaning you just have to connect the power and plug it into a USB port to instantly add more storage to your computer.

Designed to save power

The WD Elements Desktop turns on and off with your computer and enters idle mode when not in use - it also utilises a WD drive with power-saving WD GreenPower Technology and an EnergyStar compliant power supply. Environmental sustainability is important to us at Western Digital. One of the best ways we can make a positive impact on the environment is to offer products that consume less electricity. To that end, WD has designed eco-friendly hard drives with WD GreenPower Technology for WD desktop, enterprise, CE and external hard drive products.

Based on extensive customer input toward supporting ENERGY STAR 4.0 compliance and incorporating the latest in engineering technology, we developed this platform to bring more energy efficient hard drive options to our customers.

As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. Currently available 1 TB hard drives have a typical power consumption rating greater than 13.5 watts. WD has designed the first 3.5-inch hard drives that deliver power savings as the primary attribute. IntelliPower and IntelliPark are two examples of technologies that enable the WD GreenPower Technology platform.

ordered, thank you

One of these would be useful, but I keep thinking if I wait a few months will the prices drop, if any?

Hmm maybe I should just buy as you never know when a hard drive my fail and I have 2 200-250gb external drives thats are 2-3 years old, perfect time for them to fail.
#3
2200 250GB hard drives ?- now that is what I call memory!!
#4
Two external drives :D

I think they're around 300gb, I'm too tired to know.
#5
I don't think the prices will drop anymore.. IMO this is a very good price for a 1tb external considering i posted a 500gb seagate external last week for £40 and it got over 400 degrees. Rather spend an extra 5 or 6 quid and get an extra 500gb don't you agree?

Definitely ordered ... have to be a bit careful with Amazon tho - they cancelled an order of mine for an incorrect web-site price yesterday. B***ers.

on amazon it shows two leads coming from it, power and usb im guessing. Does this only work if plugged in both? or would a usb connection work it on its own?

Thankss
#9
This one has a full size internal hard drive inside and needs additional power, only the smaller externals with laptop drives inside are USB powered.

Correct, it has the USB & power lead coming from the unit & will only work if it's powered :)

I've bought over 10 of these in the past 18 months....

General thoughts are... great drives... however, had a LOT of the power adaptors fail on me, which is annoying, easy to remove drive and use as an internal though.

If people are gonna use for a NAS it may be worth reading the reviews regarding how "green power" actually works... you may lose your drive faster than you think.

Orders thanks (_;)

Ordered. HOT!

Dunno whether to go for a few more of these or half that mount in 2tb drives... hmmm... works out slightly cheaper for 2tb... but i'd rather spread the possibility of drive failure.

Of course it will get cheaper. As long as the prices for the 'internal' drives keep dropping the externals will drop too.

You'll need FAT32 for the Xbox, but if the MKVs are over 4GB in size, then you'll need NTFS and it won't be readable by the Xbox, though the Xbox can't read MKVs anyway, so you could partition the drive, having an NTFS one for MKVs, and another in FAT32 for the stuff you want to be usable on the Xbox.

Have the exact same hard drive. Brought when they were £60. There there not much bigger then a 3"5 hard drive. Needs additional power. Micro USB to USB. Works great had no problems. Should also note that amazon send through the courier home. When i got mine they threw over back gate. and brutal force + hard drive = oh dear. Regardless i wanted a replacement.

As long as you add sharing onto the hard drive then you can indeed stream to any sort of device that it supports.

I bought the 2TB version (£75) to connect to my WDTV Live, I have to say it is very quiet and you may not even know if it is on. It is also jet black all over with no led's on it, there is only a very tiny white dot on the back which shines when it is on.

The reviews suggest you do need the mains adaptor. And note that you don't get a UK one with the unit, and you can't buy one direct from the manufacturer (hence the "Europe Only" description - comes with continental mains plug).

Thanks for this, I have ordered. I have been following the external terrabyte hard drive discussion on here for a while, and didn't buy a seagate as a result. Thanks again, your wit and wisdom IS appreciated

if you want one where it doesn't need to plugged into the mains then u want a portable external hard-drive. But these tend to be more xpensive
#33
cant believe i bought one of these from whsmith on the basis it said it was on a clearance sale for £60..
ideal hard drive, cant believe its £15 cheaper now ;(
#34
Good price!

Ordered one, cheers.

Can someone post a good 2.5'' deals (ie, without the need for the external power, just USB power). 500Mb or more is what I'm after.
#37
This is definitely Hot paid £46 for 1tb just before Xmas. very quite and nice and slim too.
#38
Amazing amout of storage for little money. I have two 1tb of this and they are quiet although when dealing with storage of these quantities USB3 would be good. My last one needed initialising (don't think 1st one did) and was hours and hours doing a format and thorough disk check. then hours and hours backing up (talking over 10hours easily each step).

500GB surely and just use the advanced search function at top right of page. There have been plenty on here in the last few weeks.
