I don't think this is a USB powered drive - the description on the WD site says:

Package Contents

External USB 2.0 hard drive

USB 2.0 certified cable

AC adapter

Quick Install Guide
The phrase "AC adapter" gives it away a bit.

Having said which - hot deal! That's a seriously impressive amount of kit at a very small price.

Evidence?

I don't know about reliability but what has stopped me purchasing the WD external hard drives is that they choose not to allow you to share mp3, divx etc over your network.

who do they think they are?

Well, that'll only be network enable models, which this isn't but I understand where you're coming from. Give them an inch...

i agree with above that 1 tb HDD have problems

apparently tech is still developing

Just a warning about Play, particularly if these do prove to be unreliable:

"Our returns policy is valid for 28 days from receipt of an item."

This is their returns policy, and I naively assumed that it would be extended if they supplied faulty goods.

Be warned - it won't. Exchanged emails with them a while back over faulty goods bought outside this very short period of time, and they refused point blank to do anything about it. Basically, if your very expensive piece of kit fails 5 weeks after you've received it, you're on your own!

A UK retailer wouldn't be able to get away with this because of the Sale of Goods legislation which protects consumers. Jersey doesn't - yet - have one in place.

Buy from Play at your own risk!

They can leagally refused to exchange "faulty" goods? I would had thought they have to abide by the countries laws they are selling in. Could you not try going direct to WD (post the drive to Germany I think). I have always bought WD drives and never had a problem yet, touch wood. I have been repairing computers for a long time now and personally see a fairly high failure rate in maxtor followed by seagate. Although this may just down to the fact most manufactures use these drives over that of WD drives.

Yes - they can, and they do. They operate in Jersey, which isn't covered by UK consumer law, so basically they do as they please. If the fault shows up after 28 days - tough, you're on your own.

Anyone confirm the model of drive actually in this?
#18
am I right in thinking that WD drives only have a 1 year warranty too?

Depends on the drive, the retail version of this elements drive is 2 years.

Do you have a link to anywhere that documents what they do/do not permit (and how they enforce this - is it in the drive's firmware?).

I can't find any mention of this restriction on either the play.com or (at a quick glance) Western Digital web site.

(It seems like a really good deal for 1Tb, and WD provide a 2-year guarantee, so not too worried about play's 28 days).

Why do none of these drives have an esata connection, surely that's faster then usb.
#22
what's the noise like from these?

i have a freecom NAS drive which i hardly use due to the very loud & annonying fan
