    Word of Warning....

There seems to be a flaw with the Green Drives, basically it has a feature called Intellipark where basically after a period of 8 seconds of inactivity, the drive heads “park” themselves, or go into standby position to save power. But most OS like Windows are incompatible with this feature so what happens is that as soon as the heads are parked, they are activated again. This leads to wild oscillation between the two states which might eventually wear out the drive much quicker.

The simple solution is to download and burn a utility called wdidle3 (http://www.mikerosoft.org/Utilities/FreeDOS%20WDIDLE3.iso) onto cd and use it boot up you computer then disable the Inteillipark feature with the command wdidle3 /d to see if its disabled to type wdidle3 /r or if you want to keep the feature or have any problems then simply set the timer to 5 minutes rather than the default 8 seconds by typing the command wdidle3 /S300

You will need to take the drive out the enclosure and connect it to you PC via the sata cable then make sure that in the Bios you set the Sata to IDE and not Raid or ACHI and only have the WD Green disk connected when you do this as it may change the setting on your other disks as well.

My load cycle count is 202 after 12 hours (manufacture rated at 300,000) so in 2 years it will reach the limit oO

This is a very good deal indeed IMHO, better than the one I posted for a 1Tb @ £49 from Sainsbury's.

People, don't be put off by folks saying these are not reliable or has problems, of the millions of Hard drives sold there are always going to be one or two that turn out to be faulty irrespective of the manufacturer.

Great price....I have a 2TB and it's as silent as a mouse. In fact it's the quietest external drive I have ever had. Ordered one for backups.

I bought 2 of the 2tb ones from Dixons too when they were going for under £55 a while back.

I did however find that they both stopped working quite quickly (within 3 or 4 days).
Annoyingly when each had got to 1.4tb full.

Dixons were really good & arranged for me to swap them out @ PC World.
The 2 replacements have been as good as gold.
Whatever they do to them in transit just doesn't do them much good.

one thing that you all need to note if buying any drive is always backup up important photos or your music collection to either another drive or dvdr, trust me it might seem like ott, but when your drives dies and you loose all your family photos you'll will learn the hard way.

doesn't matter how good your drive is, it could die anytime

Use these myself - new drive out the box & stick it in PC & do a clean install, take old drive from the PC and stick it in the enclosure & copy the data over - there you have it; faster PC (clean registry etc) and if you a***e it all up you can always stick the old drive back in the PC & reformat the new hard drive & start again - heat added

    Hi

I've never owned an external hard drive. I just wanted to back up my photos, movies etc. and this seems like a good deal.

Is there anything I need to be wary of or would this be ok for my simple needs?

What is USB 2.0 and would I need to "rip out the drive"?

Thanks to anyone that can help.

This will meet your needs, assuming your PC has a USB socket. You won't need to 'rip out the drive', that's only for folks removing the HDD from these for use inside PCs.

It's a common term to use when a drive becomes faulty, they often make a continuous clicking noise sometimes called "the click of death" It happens when the read and write arm inside the disc fluctuates backwards and forwards quickly and hit's the centre bush of the disc.

I have had many dozens of drives in use and only ever had one that has gone faulty and yes it did click! (FWIW It's wasn't a WD drive)
