Jump to unread Post a CommentRead some review on Dixons...very bad review by the customers.
Seem their customer service is rubbish...
They're garbage.
Seriously they will refuse to help you, they don't consider it their problem (despite all kinds of consumer protection law saying very clearly otherwise) and refer you to the manufacturer.
My advice would be to either:
Get it from somewhere with a shop front where you can simply walk in with a faulty product (at least until the first year is up) and say "fix it" - and they will.
or
Get it from a decent on-line supplier like Amazon, who understand how to treat their customers.
Dixons are awful; they're the bottom of the barrel, they've ditched customer service and after sales care in favour of low prices and high turn-over. I'd avoid them like the plague, and all their deals on here need balancing against the pain you'll have if anything goes wrong.
I'll never buy from them again.
OMG that doesn't sound like Dixons at all !!. Are you sure you have the right company ? ;) ;) ;)
There is some truth in it though - http://www.trustpilot.co.uk/review/www.dixons.co.uk

Can anyone recommend one? And if I were to have 2, is it easy to use one to backup the other? Thinking could backup the backup drive once a month maybe and move to different location. Would hate to ever lose all family photos/videos we have.
bummer its expired.
dixons were actually pricematching amazon if anything as their price was 69.99 previously compared to amazons 61.99.
dixons only reduced the price to 61.99 yesterday afternoon so this deal was active for a short time with the voucher expiring today.
as for dixons - yeah id have preferred amazon at the same price but willing to take a punt on a uk company i can complain about rather than their EU counterparts pixmania which i cant really.
soga should protect you 'completely' for the first 6 months as no company can prove your drive didn't have an inherent fault.
28day thing is the actual law though afaik, soga is just a different thing you can use on top of it.
drive arrived today which is pretty good for time but when opened the bag the drives box has clearly has the round sealing sticker reapplied to it.
surely only possible reason is that its been:
opened and rejected or
opened used and rejected
cant see why else would be open.
i haven't actually gone ahead to open and seems to have something a bit loose inside probably a cable which id expect to be tighly fitting when brand new so backs up the fact its been open for whatever reason.
either way imo its not 'new'.
now they clearly have stock online
can i demand a replacement one or do they have the option of refunding - a repurchase would obviously cost me another 6quid.
any utilities to find out if the drive itself has been used and track how much data been written etc.?
sure i saw something that tells you how long an ssd has been used.
thanks in advance and hopefully noone else has any problems.
edit: simate no probs, i assume all is well and was properly 'virgin' sealed?

You could try PC Wizard which is free and tells you all sorts of stuff about your system including HDD power on count. I have taken a screenshot of my laptop info to show you what to click on to show it.
not opened the WD yet but tried pc wizard on another portable.
only gives the very basic for externals with no power on or time up count.
tried crystaldiskinfo (think that was the one mentioned) and it shows power on count but not time up.
should a disk have a zero boot count before first consumer usage or do they test the bare drive and/or external enclosed drive..hmm.
have a seagate 2tb which i feel is a ticking time bomb even though i have had no trouble so dont want same with the other lol.
edit: UPDATE
have opened the package and inside all looks fine - the leads were not bagged which i may have expected but not sure if supposed to be.
the drive itself was in a sealed bag - not sure if this is a manufacturer bag as quite a it bigger and when i plugged it in i got the following:
crystaldiskinfo reports 10 power ons
there is no product manual/software of any kind on the drive even though the leaflet states there should be a user guide on the drive or product cd (no cd and wasn't expecting) (just saw an amazon review which states neither were there for their drive so maybe nothing)
any thoughts?

dunno couldn't see it anyway.
looked at the 'number of harddisks' header and probably the others all randomly.
i think there is something about smart and controller compatibility on externals for getting full info.
didn't actually try the WD at that point but a freecom portable i had so will maybe try again later with the WD.
edit: retried pcwizard, get the detail for internal HD, seagate external but not the freecom and wd externals.
