Small, simple, elegant, and very easy to use. Just plug this drive in, and you've got plenty of room to back up and save your valuable data, music, photos, and movies.

Good price! Just bought one from amazon for £26 more. Don't they have a policy of refunding the difference in a certain amount of time or something? Can't seem to find it on the site.

nice price, i'm sooooo tempted... wish the 250gb version would come down a bit more as I don't need anymore storage than that..

Good price

It seems that this doesn't include software, unlike the Premium version. Should I be concerned about this?
#7
They show the more expensive model with a blue light, USB and firewire, this has a green light and just USB.

You just plug it in and it works! If you're still using something old like Windows 98 you need to download a driver from the site, I think it says in the instructions.

Not unless the software is of any use to you. If you just want a drive for extra space, then no!
#9
Good price - is USB(2) preferable to firewire?

Thanks.

Actually I think mine came with the same software on the hard drive as described in the premium version... It's useless, don't worry about it.

Cheers all; I think this is the one for me.

LOL many thanks, have been looking all day for best offer and this was £111 this afternoon. Thanks rayman. :)

Exactly what I was looking for, thanks. I guess amazon don't advertise it on their site. I like how you link to MSE and they credit HUKD for the find. :)

£26 credit is on its way, they replied very quickly!:w00t:

Iomega also have a 500gb external USB hard drive.. £99 delivered from ebuyer... + quidco. Got mine today. Seems slimmer than the WD judging from the pics.

I have the 320Gb version and i have had no problems at all, very impressive.
The 320gb cost £80 before xmas.

That's awesome,

"The fact that you can now get 1/2 a terabyte that's portable, made by WD for just over 100-squids"

Got my vote!!

Anyone know if it's actually two 250GB drives sandwiched into one?

If you have a unused Firewire Port, and it saves you buying a USB Hub down the line, then no.

For Mac owners it's a no-brainer to go with Firewire as every recent Mac has the ports, it generally has faster sustained transfer rates and is easy to use as a boot drive.

Yeah :) It's one whole 500Gb hard drive in one case.

Thanks for the feedback all ;-)

Go for the Firewire version if you have a firewire port on your machine, USB drains the processor and it's not as fast and reliable.

Good deal at Komplett for the Western Digital My Book Premium Edition 500GB USB2.0/Firewire, only £115 (£138.88 at Amazon).

My WD Book lasted less than a week.

I ordered off Amazon Fri & it was delivered Mon AM (free supersaver delivery)

This morning, I tried connecting it to the PC but Windows Explorer does not recogise the device (it is shown in device manager).

I have emailed WD support so I will let you know if their customer support is any good.

This may not be the same problem you had, but when I had a new external hard drive, I partitioned it and after doing so, it was visible in Device Manager but Windows could not see it anywhere (either of the partitions).
The problem turned out to be that drive letters had not been assigned to the new partitions (e.g. E: or whatever), so I just had to give them letters and suddenly windows could see them.
I know you don't mention partitioning the drive, but it might possibly be a similar problem. Check to see if the drive has been assigned a letter.

Hi,

No, I didn't partition the drive. I contacted WD support online and they recomend returning the device to Amazon.

I am going for a refund. A pity really, coz I have another WD external 250 GB HDD and it has worked perfectly since day 1.

The fact that others on here have had problems with this device plus the build quality is very poor (cheap plastic box). I have decided to go for a refund.
