Hi there,

The WD MyBook 250gb model is currently £67.90 on Amazon.co.uk, which if you don't mind the extra space two of these would take up, it works out slightly cheaper (£135.80 vs £169.63)

As a side note, these devices are quite heavy -- so not ideal for taking travelling, but perfect for sitting under your desktop :)

Thanks kowalski :)

Extra space is the problem else, your suggestion is good. If you need portable HD, check Ray's post here.

Interesting to note that Engadget today have a rumour/story about WD shortly bringing out a 1TB MyBook!

I keep repeating that the best value drive in the range is the 320GB for £85

£170 for 640GB - And I for one would prefer spreading the storage over 2 drives than have one 500GB of data which if was to fail would be large loss of data. 320GB on a single drive should be more than enough for any man (or woman)

Now back down to £159 delivered!

I've got to agree with margamboy - 320GB @ Amazon for £84.99 delivered? Wow
#11
Welcome to HotUKDeals jimjam and Thanks for the feedback :)
#12
The 500 gig one has an advantage being 16 meg cache ,the 320 gig has only 8 meg cache
#13
It's a good point margamboy. How ever, if you move large amounts of data with you, a single drive is more convenient! I'm glad you made that point, I may go for 2 320GB Drives.

Edit: What are the noticeable benefits of a larger Cache?!

The best value drive in the Western Digital range is the 250gb one

£63.99 (160gb) = 39.999375p per gb
£64.99 (250gb) = 25.996p per gb
£84.99 (320gb) = 26.559375p per gb
£160.62 (400gb) = 40.155p per gb
£159.08 (500gb) = 31.816p per gb

Although the 320gb is nearly the best :)
#15
WoW cheers for that comparison!

I remember when it used to be a few £ for a GB!
#16
It'll be measured by pounds soon enuff, just per terabyte by next decade :-D
#17
Hmm just lookin at the 1TB drive = £299.99

Does that make it 29.99p per GB ?! Not too good with the maths..
#18
They say the term Terabyte will become a familiar phrase for noob consumers to look out for when buying PC at the start of 2007 :-p At the moment, amateurs don't really know the term hehe..
#19
Yep 29p/gb, where did you see that? is it the Lacie 1TB box?
I ask because that seems like a not bad price, but Lacie's tend to use Hitachis and Maxtors whom I hate :|

The larger the cache faster the drive . eg external usb 2:0

2 meg cache drive i can burn 1 image @ 4 - 6 x speed
16 meg cache i can burn 3x different images at once @ 8x speed

Just ordered the 500gb My Book from Misco - was only £140 with 5% quidco on it too! That's a bargain.

It won't make any difference in the My Book's as far as backup, transfers or playback of multimedia is concerned. I've been running the Premium 320Gb ones for months and they have never paused or dropped a frame connected via firewire.
