** ENDS TUESDAY 29TH JAN ** - Instore Only

Not sure if this is a misprice, but I was in Tesco Extra, New Malden tonight and picked up a Western Digital My Book Essential 2 - 500Gb External Hard Drive for £69.97. Initially I thought it was the Mk 1 version (Green circle light on front) but upon looking at the WD site it is infact the Mk 2 version (Blue light on front).

WOW - a massive 2 pence cheaper than Amazon. Er, stone cold.

Yes, but you walk straight in to tesco and pick it up!

Yes you could. But Tesco are scumbags and I'd feel happier not putting my money in thier already swollen pockets. :whistling:

That also takes 1-3 weeks for dispatch, I'm sure if someone wants a new hard drive they wont care about a few pence if they don't want to wait for weeks. Sure Amazons has benefits for people who don't mind waiting, just like tesco has benefits for people who want it now. And when I was looking in early Jan, amazon was substantially cheaper than elsewhere (had to settle for a different hard drive as I needed a replacement pretty sharpish, so would have loved this deal back then) and 2 pence is neither here nor there
So I don't see what your complaining about , voted hot!

And Amazon are any different because ?

If I was in the market for one of these, then I'd prefer to walk into a store and pick one up. For the sake of a few pence, if it ever goes faulty, you can walk it back in for a full refund.

You also get clubpoints ;-)

Would'nt buy a WD from anywhere, they are VERY fragile to say the least and the WD customer service and support is slow, and useless...but thats just my experience

nice find

Got 2x MyBook's 500GB and 750GB, running 24 hrs a day, either being downloaded to or having files streamed from them, never had any problems with them.

Nice and quiet, power up and down with PC.

Good price for instore, voted hot.

Yup great price and no 3 week wait! I have a 320Gb version which is my archive for my media files. Its been a god send.
#12
I agree with both camps here (sit on the fence as usual), BUT

if you buy from Amazon, then you effectively have 30 days in which to hope the price drops and claim a refund - now that won't happen if you buy from Tesco.

My friend gave me a clever quick way of keeping track of this - buy one from Amazon.
When it arrives, put another in your basket (but don't checkout obviously)
Keep checking your basket for the updated price and if it drops within 30 days claim your refund.

I know it won't always happen, but in this case external HDD's are always going to drop in price over time as capacities get bigger.

much prefer a 500gb esata drive that is so quick, some good deals around £69 delivered including esata card. Very quick and not slow like these usb drives.

Great price for in-store.

Will check my store and hopefully grab one of these on the way home, cheers OP.

Anyone happen to know the drive model? Specifically IDE or SATA?

I'm in the market for a 500GB SATA drive and a SATA enclosure.

This might fit both bills and would be worth considering if it is SATA. Mind you I suppose the warranty would become an issue then and with the way HDD manufacturers struggle to maintain consistent reliability these days that is not to be overlooked. Just about talked myself out of it but it would still be nice to know the model number.

500 gb is nothing these days personally I am waiting for the WD 1tb model to come down in price from £150. Now that should keep you going for a few years !!

it hardly matters in a usb enclosure, usb2 maxes out at under 40mbps, the average sata drive does 70mbps so is already crippled by usb.

if you really care about it being sata, then you should get an esata enclosure and drive, which will go as fast as your drive can manage - the latest seagate/samsung drives do 105-115mbps.

these work perfectly with PS3's as well. they are pre formatted to work straight out the box with the PS3.
#24
Thanks, good price.
#25
Good price. WD seem to have a good reputation for reliability. Because of such poor customer service from Tesco and so many times, I'm going with amazon. Far less hassle!
#26
Anybody know where I can pick up the NAT version at a reasonable price?

A much simpler way to keep on top of the Amazon 30-day refund policy, would be to track your item using PriceProtectr

You get an email every time the price drops during the next 30days
It's a brilliant site - should be in all bargain hunters' bookmarks

Why are the networked versions of such drives so expensive? Id like one of those connected to my network so my xbox 360 and ps3 can see it without the pc being on

Just be aware that those are eSATA only. A bit of a handicap IMO.
#36
Just been and grabbed the last one at my local tesco good price and despite what some will have you believe these are brill this is my 3rd mybook not had any problems so far even dropped one from a good 5 feet and still working lol wouldn't recommend trying it though!
Agree with newskiller about the esata drives as well no good unless they've got usb aswell my laptop ain't got esata port on it & i assume theres a few people in the same boat so when it comes to backing owt up on there id be stuck, other then the obvious speed difference usb wins out imo all the time

You are missing the point. They cannot be used any machine without a similar card, unlike those with dual or even triple interfaces (eSATA/USB/Firewire).
