My Book external drive is an elegant, high-capacity storage solution for all the chapters of your digital life. Our latest edition now features visual, easy-to-use, automatic, continuous backup software and drive lock security protection, giving you beauty, brains and simplicity together in a simple to use drive.

Powered directly from the USB port on your computer, no separate power supply is needed, though an optional cable is available for the few computers that limit power from the USB port. Featuring a USB 2.0 interface for maximum flexibility the My Book Essential drive is also designed to save energy - WD GreenPower Technology lowers internal drive power consumption by up to 30%, a sleep mode reduces power during idle times and a power-saving feature turns the drive on and off with your computer.

Very nice, MyBooks are awesome solid drives. Do note 3TB single drives are coming October/November, expect the current 2TB's to drop to about £80 around then.

It's been said before but the fact that you need to install their software to use this item is unbelievable. This would have been my Sixth WD HDD but if all their products now come like this, it will be my last purchase.

Because you need to install the software, I cant access the drive through my PS3 or even WD's own media player!

WD has posted the steps to remove the Smartware and its VCD, Mac or Windows...
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdsmartwareutilities
STEP 1: Firmware Update: Release 2.003 (3/4/10)
Before running the Virtual CD Manager, you must first update the firmware on your hard drive.
1. Disconnect all other external drives from the computer except for the My Book or My Passport drive you want to update.
2. Ensure that the My Book or My Passport drive is connected to a USB port on your computer.
3. Download the Firmware Updater for Windows.
4. Unzip the file and double click to open the Firmware Updater.
5. Click Continue to update the firmware.
6. Click Accept the End User's License Agreement (EULA). The updater will scan the drive which may take a few minutes.
7. Verify the attached drive's serial number located on the back of the drive.
8. Click Update Firmware.
9. Once the updater is finished, click Exit.
10. Turn off the drive - For My Passport, disconnect the USB cable. For My Book disconnect both USB and power cables.
11. Wait 10 seconds. Reconnect the USB/power cables.

STEP 2: Download and run the VCD Manager
1. Download VCD Manager for Windows.(WDSmartWareVirtualCDManagerforWindows-v1.0.7.4.zip) to your desktop.
2. Unzip the utility (Extract the file using an extraction utility.)
3. Double click WDSmartWareVirtualCDManagerforWindows-v1.0.7.4.exe.
4. Click Continue to disable the VCD.
5. Once the utility has found your drive, click Configure Drive and then click Exit.
6. Turn off the drive - For My Passport, disconnect the USB cable. For My Book disconnect both USB and power cables.
7. Wait 10 seconds. Reconnect the USB/power cables that have been disconnected in the previous step.
8. Verify that the VCD no longer appears.

Many thanks for these links....very helpful as that smartware software is very very annoying! Will have to wait to backup the stuff on the hard drive before updating the firmware.

Hi Troll!

I'm a troll because you posted a deal badly, lul wut?

I think you will find you are a troll because you are a complete tool.
Is it th OPs fault you are too thick and / or lazy to open a thread to see the price?
#15
cheap for an xbox ;)
#16
Ok price for a drive. Not sure why it's got so hot, was up to 83C last time it was this price, a few weeks back.
#17
It's more hot because more people voted.

It’s not rocket science.

Try browsing on a GPS connection on a 2.2" screen then get back to me, would take me hours if I had to do it on every thread, it's annoying enough on the laptop never mind the phone.

You can get data connections through GPS now? Amazing :p

What size drive is inside? I'm assuming 3.5" but how can it be USB powered?

ADDITION INFO: It is a 3.5" drive and amazon reviews suggest that the "optional" power cable is less than optional.

Have had/got a total of 8 WD hard drives, ranging in sizes from 100gb to 2tb. Have never once had a hard drive fail and the one time my portable hard drive started making a very faint clicking noise I sent it to WD and they sent me back an upgraded version within 3 days.

Would recommend WD to anyone. Personally I think it is down to the way people treat them

can anyone explain me how come is it a good deal? no eSATA, or USB3... ant it costs this much when you can get 2 TB for 89 if i'm correct. to top this off - the reviews suck.

sorry, cold to me.

It's a 3.5" inside. I was thinking these lower power drives must have got below the 10W limit (2 watts on USB @ 5v) but the description is wrong. Only found out since getting it so back to returns for this drive.

It won't be long before 3.5" drives get even lower in power that they one day can be usb powered - probably by that time SSDs will have dropped in price to what HDs are today.
