Using the DRIVE10 voucher code for 10% off hard drives, this comes down to £120.59.

Not seen it anywhere near this cheap elsewhere. Seems to be around £134 everywhere else. Possible Quidco too.

-----------------------

This high-capacity Western Digital My Passport Essential SE Portable Hard Drive offers an incredible 1 TB of storage space - the first mobile drive on the market to do so. The drive is only a few mm thicker than lower capacity My Passport drives, yet it can store much more data!

As a guideline, the 1-terabyte WD My Passport Essential SE Portable Hard Drive can hold up to 200,000 digital photos, 250,000 mp3 songs, 25,000 uncompressed CD quality songs, 76 hours of Digital Video (DV), 380 hours of DVD quality video, or 120 hours of HD video. This mobile hard disk is a dream come true for pack rats and hoarders everywhere - not to mention digital photographers, videographers, music lovers, and many others!

It's easy to use too. Because the hard drive inside is an energy-efficient 2.5-inch disk, it can get all the power it needs from a USB connection. That means you don't have to carry around a bulky power adaptor, and it also means using the drive is as simple as plugging it in.

As an added bonus, the WD My Passport Essential SE Portable Hard Drive comes with SmartWare backup software pre-loaded. Put your life on it!

Thanks boss.
Could buy 2x 500GB portable hdds for £60 but may as well have one large one unless require mirror backups.

One question, could I cannibalise this to remove the HDD? Is it 9.5mm? Has the USB interface been soldered onto the HDD board?

WD need to release more FW portable drives.

The largest capacity 9.5mm drive currently available is 640GB. All 2.5'' drives above this are currently 12mm height. (They use three platters rather than 2) I know Samsung S2 USB drives are 10% smaller than the competiton by fitting a usb ciruit board to the actual drive , removing the SATA connectors. I went to order one then found out they had the new dreaded circuit board. - USB drives tend to be cheaper than hard disks of the same capacitiy when they are first released - thats why people canabalise them!
.
Hope this helps

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3835&p_sid=13n7K4Mj&p_lva=3779 to remove the awful VCD partition.
These drives are 12.5mm with a custom USB PCB, no SATA connector. The WD10TPVT 1TB drive has just been released in the USA and is available on eBay for around £130 delivered (fits in a Macbook perfectly !!)

Beware though ...... I bought one from Dixons a few weeks ago, but had to take it back because of the software on the HD. If you try to remove it in the way that WD suggest on their site you'll kill the drive. I bought an Iomega from Tesco instead - no stupid software partitions.

You can buy a 500gb external disk from Play for £47.99 so 2 = £95.98

Is it really worth paying £25 more ???
