Nar this is Hot for a Network HDD with 500gb, Useless someone finds it cheaper....Hot!

You could get around this price if you went for a NAS enclosure and bought a drive to go in it, but for a complete system, then its a good price. Can it act as a print server too?

is this 2 drives in one ie 2x250 so the possibility of a mirror or is the image wrong and its just a 500gb drive in single case.

£5 isn't "a lot", plus it's a different drive.

Unfortunately not, it's the MyBook World Edition II that have 2 drives inside for Raid setup.

How big is this, like? I'll have to shove it in me case when we emigrate and I don't want it if it's as big as a watermelon.
#15
i was going to say about the voucher but been beat to it

there is the bonus that this can be hacket and nzbget installed which means you can run your usenet client without needing to run your pc, thats what i am going to be using it for.

If you're correct then it's a bit dodgy from Tesco as they show the My Book II picture and even say "...Extra protection with RAID 1 East to set up, easy to use "

If it doesn't have Raid 1 you won't be wanting to store data on it; but I think this model allows connection by USB of external drives so could possibly mess about in Linux and mirror between the internal and external..

According to the customer reviews I read; these drives are slow so don't expect to be able to make speedy backups; but they will stream HD OK - which I presume is what most people will use it for.

HOT

I bought a 1.5TB drive from Maplins for £130 last year. That makes this offering rather weak, in my opinion. I know this offers RAID architecture, but unless you're running a business on it, I'm not sure it's worth the money.
#21
Cold from me. It's two 250GB tiddlers melded into a single 500GB volume, which doesn't say much for its long-term reliability or energy consumption. On top of that, it's overpriced for a 500GB drive. http://www.ebuyer.com/search?store=2&cat=4&subcat=247 lists them starting at £70 delivered, with a Freecom 1TB drive (single internal drive) available for £112.

I see... is that because you say so, or is there a real reason?
#25
I get the feeling that people don't know what this drive actually IS.... no surprise with Tesco's method of describing stuff.
For one, it is not the new model, and it is not as good value per Gb as the 1Tb v1 available for 134 quid or so, although it seems to have some mixed reviews anyway; and it isn't as fully featured as the new 1Tb version for £143@ http://www.shop.bt.com/productview.aspx?quicklinx=5GTX which does seem better/

For cheapness (and basic functionality, ie streaming video etc (although no uPnP I think) the Iomega one looks a better buy, and for features the new model from BT is a better buy, although a good bit more money, albeit twice the capacity.

I think SUMMONER is right. Looking at the Western Digital website (http://support.wdc.com/product/spec.asp?groupid=106&lang=en), I can only see one 500GB product when looking at either MyBook World Edition or MyBook World Edition II.

If you look at the overall physical dimensions for the 500GB MyBook World Edition 2.23 in. (56.7 mm), it's not wide enough to hold 2 drives.

Looks like the Tesco's website has the wrong specs. Maybe someone could as Tesco about the product number. If it matches WDG1NC5000E then it's not RAID 0 or 1 and hence only contains one drive. :(

I was looking at Amazon comments about either version:

* World Edition (http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B000MSVNM4/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1)

* World Edition II (http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B000PC29CA/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1)

The first sounds slow and the second one seems not so good either (DRM, lossing data).

I think I'll look elsewhere...

I find it hard to believe we've made it into page 2 and people are still posting USB HDDs for comparison to what is a NAS (Ethernet connected) drive.

What next - comparing Apples with Dells? :)

Also - please don't suggest using a 'cheap NAS enclosure' as they're utterly and totally useless products. Unless you snag a bargain from somewhere you need to budget for £60-70 for something like a NSLU2 as your 'entry level' NAS and that's just the NAS - no storage is included...
#29
Does anyone actually know which version of the WD MyBook World this is? I've ordered one but if its not the one I want its going back.
#30
I have one of these and would advise against buying one. The software is really bad to use and ours hasnt worked properly for months. If you want to make full use of the World Edition software you need to pay to use the software client. You only get a 3 month trial of the software and when it expires is when you start having problems accessing the drive.

Weird that its listed with a depth of 57cm...

If you assume that should read 5.7, then the other measurements do match to earlier drive

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-500GB-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B000MSVNM4/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

So no RAID...

Still not a terrible deal, a solid hackable NAS drive (print serving, torrent server etc.) for £85

I'm in the market, but want to hold out for a raided solution...

Yes, its bigger but a totally different product. This thread relates to Network Drive.

For those of you who are hanging on to their pennies and may already have 1 or 2 spare SATA drives taking on dust, buy one of these. Link

http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/images/imgB89538.jpg

Unfortunately there are no custom firmwares for it, that I am aware of, but it is a pretty decent entry level NAS enclosure none the less.
#34
Just build your own NAS and stick FreeNAS on it... much easier and cheaper solution...

I see this quote on every post for a NAS, but am not convinced. I'm not an expert on freenas, so I genuinely want to know if I've got the wrong end of the stick.

If I wanted the power drain and noise of a PC on all the time, I'd just leave my main PC on, surely one of the big advantages to a device like this (especially a modded one) is that it performs some great functions quietly, with minimal power and a tiny footprint?
