Seeing as the Maxtor One Touch 60GB deal is done (I was one of the lucky 1000 or so), thought this looked like the next best deal, certainly is on Ebuyer.

120GB Passport II drive for the grand total of £47.57 delivered (remember to select Super-Saver delivery) and using Google Checkout. Just a few quid more expensive (in terms of cost per GB) than the Maxtor deal and it is a lot 'prettier' if that's what you like.

I wish I hadn't got rid of my WD Passport :( Far better than the Maxtor imo!

(okay, maybe I'm just a tad biased lol)

Great little drive :)

damn, i'll see if I can return or even sell on the maxtor, it's still sitting here unopened. I didn't realise it was only 60Gb when i ordered it, my back-ups for my computer weigh in at a hefty 80GB so this'll do nicely for the weekly back up.

oh blimey, didn't realise the maxtor was only £20, i'll keep it ^_^

A couple of questions to anyone who owns one of these;

1. Is it easy to open the unit and swap hard drives?
2. Is the unit powered by a separate usb cable, a single usb cable or a split single usb cable?

I'm after one of these that just uses a single usb cable rather than one that uses 2 usb ports on your computer but don't know if that's possible.

Thanks.

I don't belive it has extra power sorry.
That's the only thing holding me off....

this came with a single usb port... mine anyway....

1. Very easy to open and swap - you don't even need tools. The casing snaps open/close along the seam. You just snap it open and pull the ide connector off, that's it.

2. It's powered by a single standard usb cable. One end is the mini usb connector (like Motorola phones and Canon cameras etc. use) and the other end is the rectangle standard size usb which plugs into your computer.

To get extra power you need to buy a Y usb cable. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/accessories.asp?ProdID=170

You can get USB power booster cables which are basically one mini USB connector for the HDD to two standard USB connectors. This means you can plug one drive into two USB ports and give it more power

My Lacie drive at work came with one as standard but it looks like WD charge £10 for theirs: -

Would anyone know if this works on a XBOX 360? Thanks.
#19
Whats the differnce between this hard drive and the one Amazon are selling? Cheers.
#20
Thought it was the same drive? Only the price different, now £52.99 on amazon.
#21
Yeah same drive :)

Found out that it works prefectly with a xbox 360 - wmv format (saves discs and less wear on the drive).

I am also looking at buying a HDMI DVD player (upscaling to 1080i) with usb which plays divx and xvids. Would this drive be ok for that as generally the dvd players are only usb 1.0?

Finally I have a lot of HD movies from Newsbins which are in wmv, will these be played as HD (I have a LG HD-TV) on my xbox 360?

Many Thanks.

I wonder if Western Digital will start to make larger sized passport drives?

The current largest one is 160gb but take a look at this article:

http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news/news.phtml/7818/8842/Western-Digital-shipping-WD-Scorpio.phtml

wonder if these will end up inside the WD passports ? .... a 250gb portable drive would be ace

For the power cable your just as well to buy a cheap 2.5" USB Enclosure (making sure it has the dual usb cable in) off Ebay. As you can get the as low as £8 and the delivery would be just as quick.

Thanks carphead and welcome to HUKD!

One note everyone, mine came with an extremely short USB Cable - like 20 cm!! How ever, if you check out the spec on Amazon, it says it comes with a 56cm. The manual also says it should have a 22inch cable! So I've sent them an email saying mis-sold to me- trading standards ought be notified if they refuse to do nothing!!

You should all try to aswell. People have commented on the product as to how short the cable is on the amazon site. If only they read the full spec of the device and knew the law!!

Matt.
