As soon as you boot your PS3 with your new drive installed the PS3 automatically detects it and formats it before it does anything else. It doesn't take too long.

Not sure about ur Linux question though.

Does upgrading the drive void the warranty? Can anyone recommend a good guide for doing this.

I should be getting a PS3 any day and would like a big hard drive so I can record TV using PlayTV.

Thanks in advance of any replies :)
#10
No - commonly asked question.
As per Sony - upgrading the hard drive does not affect your warranty..

They even provdide you details of how to do it on their website!

You can only format the hard drive for either a 10GB Linux partition/the rest PS3, or 10GB PS3 partition/the rest Linux.

Can any PS3 users out there confirm whether or not, in addition to upgrading the internal HDD, you can simply attach an hdd externally using a caddy connected via USB?

If you can, then a terrabite drive may be for me!

Yes you can vorn, but needs to be formatted in the fat32 filesystem. I have the my old ps3 harddrive in an external enclosure connected to my ps3
#15
It's £56.06 delivered at kikatek so you're not saving a whole lot

With an external you are limited to FAT32 and therefore 4GB file sizes

Upgrade the internal And because its ***not FAT32 you can transfer a 15GB HD file to the PS3 with something like tversity and not limit yourself to file sizes

***Its some kind of proprietary file system
I know an external HDD has to be formatted into Fat32 for the PS3 to recognize it but it doesn't mean that the internal one is formatted in the same way.

It is impossible for the PS3 file system to be FAT32 because in FAT32, no single file can be more than 4GB and yet you can have a file over 4GB on the internal harddrive
#17
you cannot use external drive the same way you can for the internal for ps3 system files etc, ext drives are just for media etc.

Why is this expired? Still in stock and its still £59.99...

ps3ud0 8-)

thanks for getting back about linux, after watching a few youtube vids it doesn't look like it's worth the bother, and to only have 10gb dedicated to either side, :?

I cancelled mine on Play as they took too long to process the order and I wanted it quicker. Ordered with Scan for £55.45 delivered (free delivery with AV Froums), will be here today.

I've just bought a PS3 80GB recently, so new to all this upgrading the HD larkey.

Is it pretty easy to install and won't the warranty be void if I open it up?
#22
Yes its easy, no the warrantly won't be void. Its in the original instructions :)

Its behind a little panel on the left side of the console that pops off. Really simple..

Take a look here: http://www.gamersreports.com/article/43/

i brought one of these from ebuyer last week, £55 free delivery, came in 2 days. Although its not on their site now, it seems like the prices are going up a little. might have something to do with playtv coming out for ps3. But the installion is very quick and simple took a few minutes to install and quick format (although i did do a full format after this which took 18 hours)

Here a nice vid that shows u how to change the ps hd - http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-change-a-playstation-3-hard-disc

Why expired?
