i installed mine today - just make sure you have the right size screwdriver and the blue screw is very tight

Hot for me, I grabbed the one from Play a while ago though.

This step by step guide helped me, nice and easy AND it has pics

Aren't you better getting it from Play.com with 5% RAC and Quidco?

Sorry if yours is better. I thought they were the same.

wow that is simple, my bad thought might be a pain, although thanks dancehalting for the link on the linux installing nice :)
#8
might get one for the macbook.

I'd pay an extra tenner and get the Scorpio Black from Ebuyer. Same drive but with 7200rpm and 16mb cache. Ordered one last week. Should be here on monday :O)

I've read the 7200 drives offer little to no advantages in the PS3.

Heard they were louder but I don't think that was true.

Thanks OP . Im sick of juggling space on the HD , Im going to order one of these bad boys .

As someone else has pointed out there is no benefit to be gained from adding a 7200rpm drive. If anything it might give off too much heat. Better off sticking to tried and tested 5400rpm drives.

I'm confused. Is this a hot deal or just a recommended product?
#17
So is the one from Play the same but cheaper

No one seems to care

Edit - just seen the above post, I thought so.

In my opinion no, I ordered my drive from Play and it was not sent in adequate packaging (thin envelope and the drive was wrapped in the A4 invoice for padding) so I sent it back in disgust.

Mine arrived in a jiffy bag in a box.

It's been this price at play.com for ages and I got a free bluray with it (still available I think?), so not a great deal to me.

I had an issue with the screws on the side when installing my new HDD, the screws got messed up even though I had the correct screwdriver size. If that happens to you take it to a computer store or if you have a dremel cut a slot in the screws so you can use a flathead screwdriver.

The manual that comes with the PS3 is probably enough - it's an officially allowed thing to do! But plenty of videos etc. as linked already.
#23
Its pretty self-explanatory.

Take off the hard drive cover, undo the screw, slide out the cage, undo the screws attaching the hard drive to the cage, then reverse.

A couple of questions from me:

Does the new HD need formatting before installation?

Once I pop my old 80GB drive into an enclosure, will I be able to plug the 80GB into the PS3 USB, to copy across my game saves?

no u just use a usb flash drive to save all your settings before removing the old hd
and u dont need to format the new hd before

Or, if you bought the same capacity Iomega external drive from Tescos for the same price or thereabouts, you would have an external case for 'free' :)

[put your old PS3 drive in it]

Running out of space on my 40gb so it's time for me to upgrade.

Is this better than the Iomega external drive from Tescos?
