5% off voucher works - 4% Quidco too = £45.59

This is a deal/hint thread for those that don't know about this, you can go upto 500GB(cheers Blackster) - but currently only one SATA hard drive(Samsung) can fit into the PS3 and costs nearly £90-£100.

I think this is a decent deal for a generous 320GBs - remember it ALWAYS has to be a 9.5mm 2.5" SATA drive to fit inside your PS3. Some handy links below too.....and......

Not a bad price but it's the same price on Ebuyer and Amazon is only 50p more. Neither hot not cold IMO

Had one of these in my PS3 for a few months. Remember to backup your saves before swapping!

How easy is it to stick all your xvids on this drive and use the media player to play them?

ATM im streaming the little ones kids films over LAN but would sooner have them on HD and play direct to free up my server. Have DL'd a RedKawa proggy that is supposed to communicate with the PS3 but havent got round to installing coz the PS3 is only 40gig and i could only get a few films on it. With this id be able to store them all !

Also how far away are reasonably priced 500gig 2.5"ers ?

Back to the OP though - although standard price this is good considering the 5% and quidco, imo better than other deals ive seen.

Use the software you use for streaming to copy them over (whether it's Tversity or WMP11)

Just highlight the video you are streaming and press the triangle button, then choose copy ;-)

If anyone wants a 500gb 2.5" then this will fit

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/500-GB-Samsung-HM500LI-Spinpoint-M6-25-SATA-300-5400-rpm-8MB-Cache-12-ms

Please note that the PS3 will only accept 9.5mm sized 2.5" drives

Is that the one you got pal?
#20
not got it yet, i was going to order one, but a friend of mine has this installed and it works fine, however the thing you have to watch is the size of the drive itself, it has to be 9.5mm otherwise it will not fit, some other branded 500gb 2.5"'s are bigger

If anyone is getting incorrect drive readings then i suggest you upgrade your firmware.

PS the drive also has to be SATA and not PATA (IDE)

cool mon brave - thx for posting.

I think I'll stick with the 320GB route - more cost effective at the moment - doubt I'll fill 320GB anyway!.

Sick of seeing my 60gb showing as 0.1gb left :)

The drive is actually 298Gb, but due to false advertising is rounded up to 320 (they say 1GB is 1000Mb when its actually 1024Mb). Then the PS3 reserves 10% of this (not sure what for), roughly 30Gb, then the system software etc takes around 5gb leaving you with aprrox 265GB.
#23
It's not really false advertising as such - more misinformed than anything  It's that the industry uses 2MB^10 as 1GB, while the advertising people use 1000MB to a GB, hence the difference. A small portion is lost to the formatting of the drive too.
#24
you beat me to it :-D

I bought this drive a month or so ago for my PS3 from Play.com, it was the first time i had bought any hardware from play.com. Usually I've just bought games/cd's or dvd's from play and they're always packaged in a jiffy bag.

Well Play.com delivered my drive in the exact same way, the drive was in it's antistatic sealed bag, but it was floating around in a large jiffy bag when delivered. I couldn't get the drive working at first as it seemed to "click" and my PC wouldn't detect it at all. But it's since started working, and appears to be OK. However, i've no idea how the Royal Mail might have treated the jiffy bag so I wasn't suprised that I had some problems.

I'm not saying this isn't a good deal, just wanted to make people aware that it might get delivered in the same way. And being honest after what I experienced, i am not going to be ordering any more stuff like this from play.com

Great find - H & R to OP.

An alternative would be to hook up an external drive - the drive would have to be formatted to FAT32 and contain four folders as per the PS" set up i.e. Photo, Music, Video and Game. Copy over your DivX, photos, music etc to the relevant folder (the Game folder would be empty) and the PS3 will recognise these and play the selected fiel directly from the external HD. Tip - press the triangle to select "Display All" and this will bring up all the files held within the folder.

I'm still undecided between the upgraded internal HD or the bigger external - there'a another thread on hwere for a 1TB external for £70 which is better value overall.

This method restricts you to 4Gb maximum file size as this is a restriction of the Fat32 FS. Okay for SD videos but you will struggle with some HD videos with that file size restriction.

If you have enough network bandwidth a better option is to leave the External drive formatted as NTFS, hook it up to your PC and stream the content to your PS3 with WMP11 or Tversity on your PC

Hi all,

Thinking of upgrading the 60G in my PS3 for this hard drive, it seems the install process is simple enough, but am I right in thinking I will need to transfer all my saves, patches and game downloads etc over to some form of external storage first, and then reload them onto the new drive??

Not sure how this process really works. I dont have an external storage large enough to do this, so is this a stumbling point for me??

I would hate to lose GT5 prologue and some PS network games I have.

Hoping one of the more cluded up HUKD members can enlighten me.

Thanks in advance.

http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2570/ps3_how_to_backup_ps3_game_save_files/

need fat32 ext hard drive or very large memory card/ usb pen

A few games have copy protected game save files. To backup these files you can’t just copy them to a memory stick, you will need to do an actual system backup.

This is all true, files over 4GB can be stramed or copied over the network. This is the best option if you want to put lossless DVDs on your PS3 cos the file usually comes in at about 5-7GB

No. Even tells you in the PS3 manual how to do it ;-)
