Cool, been keeping an eye out for one of these! What's the best guide to follow to do and backup with out losing 1 thing? Is there absolutely nothing you have to do when you switch the ps3 back on then!???

Anyone volunteering to replace my laptop hard drive and transfer my existing data?
The whole process strikes fear into my heart.

I used this guide when doing the PS3 hard drive upgrade. It was really easy though, to sum it up:

Back up your PS3 stuff onto a portable drive.

Take the old drive out.

Put the new one in.

Turn the PS3 on and wait for it to format the drive.

Update the PS3 firmware if necessary

Restore your files from your portable drive.

It took me about 10 minutes to do the actual change over. The rest was just waiting for everything to format etc. All saved games and DLC remained intact when I did it although when I emailed Sony they said some games saved date and DLC would not restore properly.

Acronis TrueImage (amonst others) has a feature builtin that assist in upgrading an existing hard drive onto a bigger new one. I've used it a number of times to upgrade desktop drives (in desktop PCs) but have never tried with notebooks.

just download a copy of Symantec's Norton Ghost of torrent site.

Tempted by this only got the 40GB Version, just put Tom Clancy's HAWX on from a previous deal and it takes 5GB by itself...not to mention the other saved games and guitar hero/singstar tracks i've downloaded!
#16
What exactly do you put on your PS3 to warrent 320gb? I have a 40gb - quite a few games etc .

Do you store films on it etc? Am I not taking advantage of my PS3 in some way?!

I watch films via PS3 media server.
#17
These will also fit in the MacBook Pro - not every 2.5" hard disk will, only standard height ones.

A very good hard disk, I've been using one for a couple of years with absolutely no complaints

It depends to be honest, you may not have need for it, like one of the guys I work with just has a couple of games got lots of space.

However as i said i've just loaded a game (Tom Clancy's HAWX), which i bought on disc, which loads 5GB onto the PS3 hard drive just as running/config files for it to access quickly.

Also some games such as the Rock band, Guitar Hero, Singstar etc have the facility to download extra content onto the hard drive, which you can purchase, such as extra songs/tracks, extra maps etc from the playstation store.

A larger hard drive could also allow you to store your mp3 collection on the system itself and use it in some of the games which allow you to use your own music library.

At some point you may need to upgrade as you use it more...just depends on the games and which extras you download for said games.

RAC Discount doesn't work with this item, still a decent price though.
#20
My UCAS card won't work either.

Better to buy the 320GB iomega USB one from tesco...£44.97 + Quidco... seagate 5400rpm
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.205-6006.aspx
then you can pop your old PS3 drive in the caddy and still use it!

Can't do this, There a BIG sticker on the orginal PS3 HDD tell you that.
Also BEST to keep your old drive, as if ever needs to go back to get repaired, NEED to have orginal HDD in system

Really? I'm sure loads of people have put their PS3 drives into an external caddy without a problem (well, the ones who have done it have never mentioned the sticker).

Will that IOMEGA drive definately fit in the PS3 and let you put a different drive in the caddy?

I've upgraded my PS3 to a 320Gb ages ago. The 40Gb that came out of it has been inside an external enclosure and has been used on PCs and Macs with no problem after reformatting it. Just last week I managed to get it working with my Wii as well!

Will this fit in Dell 1520 as well? Can someone send me the guide/link for how to move windoes vista on existing one to this new drive.
#27
Does anyone know if there are any deals going anywhere on 2.5" 7200rpm versions?
Not too fussed about capacity, as long as it's 250GB or higher.
#28
I bought one of these back in Febuary , installed and up and running in minutes. Trouble is ive nearly filled it up allready....ha ha! Great deal for this.

Glad I could help. I wish I had got this 5400rpm version instead though as the spindle noise (even just idling) from the 7200rpm is definitely noticeable over the stock 120Gb that came out... a very quiet but constant wooshing noise :x :-D
#31
Got this in my original 60GB PS3, works like a charm.

Not everyone can stream, or have poor wireless connections, so an upgrade is a good choice, plus less time to buffer movies/music/photos etc, plus easily creating playlists.

Of course you can put your original PS3 HDD into a caddy!
#32
I love you....I mean my PS3 loves you....Gonna Buy it and vote hot...

Just ordered one been meaning to do this sooner cheers OP

Damn, I have finally caved in and gone for this - I normally stream all my media to my PS3, but will now keep at least my music and photos, and the kids tv shows on there - maybe a few other bits and bobs too. Streaming is OK, but occasionally stutters/buffers, which can be annoying, especially when you are watching a good movie. May give Play TV a try now too......? Cheers OP

Or Vista has a full pc backup built in. Back up to DVD's then restore using Windows CD with new HD installed. That way you don't have to download stuff illegally :-p
#36
got one of these last year for £55. dead easy to put in your ps3. only thing is backing up takes ages! although quicker than redownloading everything! i used my 160GB ipod to back up the 60GB
#37
Great price, but not quite as good as the tesco iomega deal imo

And i assume you wouldnt but a flight to new york for £50 just beacuse they sell mni replica Statue of Libertys in your local shop for £3...

This is so that you can upgrade your hard drive on your laptop internally or upgrade your Ps3 drive with a larger capacity. The tesco iomega drive is an external drive...they are entirely different and canot be compared.

Plus this is a good, reliable brand and the tesco deal has expired.

Best to upgrade your Ps3 hard drie with a 5400rpm 2.5" and no quicker than 1.5gb/s transfer rate.

The slower spindle speed will not be noticed to that of a 7200rpm but will be a lot quieter as already stated and will prevent the Ps3 from getting as hot.

The ps3 is limited to a rate of 1.5gb/s transfer so buying a drive with a transfer of 3gb/s will cost more and ultimately be a waste of money.

Another thing to mention is that by adding a new hard drive to your Ps3 woill not void the warranty and is actualy encouraged by Sony.
