Delivery is 1-2 months but amazon aren't that reliable with their estimates IME. Still £90-£100 everywhere else I looked.

Western Digital TV HD 1080P Media Player

The Western Digital Media Player is a revolutionary device which offers a simple and inexpensive way of watching media files on a traditional TV. Simply connect your USB enabled device to the player and away you go.

What makes this device especially remarkable is not just the simplicity of operation, or the long list of media file types it can handle but that it can even handle Full High Definition 1080p movie files.

This is quite a remarkable achievement for a product in this price range and a feature that has obvious advantages. At present there are several ways to watch and enjoy High Definition movies but each have their drawbacks and limitations not least of which is the cost.

Although the media player is designed for use with the My Passport storage device it will also work with almost any other USB storage device so you can plug and play files direct from your digital camera, camcorder or MP3 player. you can even connect two separate devices at the same time - the media player will sort the content into one easy to manage menu list.

Probably but you are looking at £200+ for it so in a rather different league

I use my Xbox 360 for playing back HD files so I'll save my cash. You do have to convert the MKV though for it to play which you don't with this device.

Is Hot anyway!

I do the same or just try to get wmv-hd where posssible but converting to full 1080p takes HOURS, not just a handful like a day. I've got a core 2 duo 2.6 running 2gb of ram and with only the encoder running a full 1080p MKV to full 1080p wmv-hd takes about a day so really not practical at all.

As above the popcorn hour is the ultimate solution, can be had for £150 if you buy it direct and are prepared to wait else as posted £200+ on fleabay.

This has had great reviews and seems a half way point for reasonable cash.

no need to convert them just use a program that re-packs it so the xbox 360 can read it. theres no quality loss and it doesnt conver the video. try XenonMKV it works for me!

Xbox 1 isn't powerful enough to playback even a 720p .mkv blu-ray rip.

A 4.5gb blu-ray rip takes me less than 25min to download. You are doing something wrong.

Didn't say it was - upscaled stuff to 1080i is fine for me right now - well worth the £20 I spent on a 2nd hand Xbox 1.
#17
I use an HDMI upscaling dvd player which I got for £30 from lidl for the same purpose.... not full HD I know, but If anyone is looking to do it cheaply

'much better'
No.

'can play ANY file created
No.'

The WD HDTV uses exactly the same chipset as the popcorn hour, the only difference it the lack of a network jack.

Western Digital have released a new firmware for this WD TV HD which fixes most of the problems with file compatabilty, ther is another firmaware scheduled for release in the next couple of weeks.

Voted HOT

These things are great. Had mine from Macro £65ish and its been one of the best gadgets I have ever bought.

It has played all of my Video from Hi Def mt.files from my hi def AVCHD Panasonic sd1 camcorder (renamed to MT2S files- but since the updated firmware they play without being renamed GREAT!! ) to standard AVI's and Mpeg2's which all look great .

I use my WD passport 320gb hard drive, usb pen drives and even an sd card plugged into a usb card reader.

The firmware updates just makes this thing better......

For the ease of getting all sorts of files(esp Hi Def ones) to play on a big screen compared to the cost of this unit I cannot recommend it enough.

This wee machine is the dogs. It plays anything you chuck at it (apart from DTS) and all for under £80!!!

delivery is a problem as amazon have been saying that delivery for over a month now.

still a misleading statement.

tho I agree that the original xbox with xbmc is amazing media player for £20 or however cheap you can pick one up for now.

can't believe someone suggested using a 360, I'd rather leave the hoover on whilst watching a dvd

In 1 or 2 months people will still be trying to get hold of this item. Demand has been so hot its near impossible to obtain one without intensive searching, or willing to pay over the odds. First released in November, but 2 months later, still as rare as gold dust!

DTS sound is output via a decoder connected to the optical output only. This limitation is same with a lot of DVD players.

newer 360s are a bit quieter. I do agree with you its hassle through a 360 but i think ill put up with it as i dont have any money to buy this machine. If i did i would have it in a flash! voted hot!
original xbox isnt much use for HD files.
#27
I have a 360, Xbox with XBMC (component output) and a good upscaling DVD and none of them are a good way of watching hidef MKV etc. Only downside with this box is the lack of ethernet. Play were doing it for £80 before Xmas but I notice it has crept up to £99!

If only the old Xbox had a little more grunt...........

NOt a like for like comparison. Upscaled DVD or Freeview image is way inferior to a proper HD image.

Try also GOTSENT. Converts a 4gb file in 20 minutes in my old basic dual core pc. Does not re-encode. Just changes the "container".

can this or the popcorn play .iso files ?
i.e dvd's imaged directly to .iso to preserve full quality, subitles etc

Hi

wm i right in saying i couldnt hook up my usb hddvd drive to stream HDDVD's? (or can you)

cheers
#31
They've always been this price haven't they? TBH I'd probably buy one if I didn't have my old-skool XBOX on file-playing duties. They're well cheap and some of the WD dev boys hang out on some of those "certain websites" so know what people want the box to do.

A 4.5GB film ain't blu-ray quality, it will be DVD quality or less than DVD quality. The whole point of blu-ray is they have upto 50GB (single sided double layer) of data, a DVD has upto 8.5GB (single sided double layer) of data.
#34
I have this, and it's not bad. It's played all the 720p and 1080p MKV files I've thrown at it, as well as some Xvid and DivX AVIs. There are problems with it though, it takes a really long time to start up, and when in "standby" it doesn't turn off the external HDs, so they always remain spinning.
#35
am tempted to get one of these now.... Do you guys know if the Makro deal is still on?

Also for content that is standard res does this upscale things, like process the picture to reduce artifacts occuring? Also noticed it says on the WD website:
"An audio receiver is required for surround sound output. AAC/Dolby Digital decodes in 2 channel output only"
Any idea if there is a way round this?

I have a load of WMV-HD files that I used to play via the xbox 360 and M-HD files, I hope this can play it?

A 4.5GB 720p encoded file can be just as good as bluray quality, depending on the source and the displayed used. If you have a 720p TV then there's not much point in getting 1080p files which are ~10GB.

It'll be FAR better than DVD, remember we're not talking about MPEG2 file sizes here, this is H.264.

Not true.
A HD movie can be compressed to 4gb, retaining about 80% of its quality.
Same principle as how a divx movie is about 10% the size of a dvd, but 80% the quality.

Compressed HD formats like MKV, WMV-HD, Divx-HD are a lot better quality than DVD.

I have a 42" 1080p plasma so a 4.5GB film won't be as good as a blu-ray disk

1. Makro deal almost ended the day before they started! They put them out early! Thats how I got mine.

2. Yes, it does upscale SD stuff.

3. All audio format will play on your TV as stereo, except DTS, for which you need a decoder connected to the WD's optical output. To get round this, use GOTSENT to convert the whole file .. this will automatically change any audio to stereo. Takes only 20 mins to convert a 4gb file.

3. WMV-HD plays, but without sound, if its encoded in WMV audio. either reencode or hope and wait for another firmware update.
