Good review of it HERE

I don't need more electronics.. I don't... really...

Up to £10 cheaper @ CDiscount this w/e IF you go via Quidco, make order up to >£100 and get 15% credit. Think I'll go with Amazon though, for no hassle and reliable customer service.
#9
Has always been this price at Amazon so not a hot deal as such, in fact this was the price (across the board) of the player when it was first released but it has been such a big hit that ALL the retailers have put their prices up (probably due to pure greed) apart from Amazon.

Great little player though and does a great job with HD MKV files as well as Standard avi files - picture quality is first rate via HDMI.

If you want a cheap alternative.....buy a phillips upscalling dvd player with the usb port. (£30-40) I play all my divx, avi and mp4's through it no stall or anything using 500gb mybook. Had no problems at all.

I'm a big fan of Amazon too, but I'm pretty sure they also put their price up to £89.99.

Anyway, I'm glad to see it back to £79.99 and also in stock. The only problem is that I have so many gadgets these days that my wife would kill me is I added to the pile.
#15
edit! oops too early in the morning I read it wrong.

This is an excellent device it only has problems with dts encoding on mkv files, 5.1 is fine.
It plays 1080p really smooth.
Only thing to watch is the auto scaler if you're watching a 720p film and its set to 1080p it upscales and causes noise it you set to output to 720p it looks fantastic.

Good find.

Shame it doesn't have a Ethernet port, other then that it's great.

Popcorn hour offers exactly the same features, but it also features an Ethernet port as well.
#22
Some users have flashed the firmware with one that can see SMB shares and used a USB to ethernet (like those you get for the Wii) with success. I'm looking to this to replace my HTPC as I don't watch discs of any kind and am looking to get Sky HD. I've seen this in action and it just does what it says, which is nice.

Have a mooch thru this thread to see what you can do with it:

I'm semi-interested in this device entirely because of the fact that it runs Linux and therefore can be modified.
#26
It's a fair price but you still have to add an external hard drive and the video connection choices are limited too. It might work out cheaper to buy a media drive with built in hard drive and networking capabilities.

For anyone who already has one, I wonder if you can help me out a bit. I'm pretty sure the answer's yes but I thought I'd double check before splashing out! Can it play files off any USB device, ie my SanDisk USB stick, or does it have to be a WD MyPassport?

Sorry if it sounds dumb, but it's better than wasting £80 if it can't :).

You can use any USB mass storage device.

It can be any usb device , I have maxtor 750gig in the rear port and plug in USB sticks into the side port.Works a treat.
#31
Cheers guys. Will definitely grab one of these, and a USB network adaptor. Works out a lot cheaper than the PCH! I know it's probably not as good spec wise, but it'll do what I want quite nicely. Thanks again.

Anyone think this would work with an external dvd (or even blu ray) drive plugged in the usb ?

It will not work. This is because the WDTV has to be able to write to the device (it creates a small folder in usb device) for it to work. For an optical disc device to work, it would need to allow the WDTV to write to it on the fly, and I think souch a drive does not exist.
#36
Thanks for that, very quick, answer.

Thought it might do for a mate of mine whose so untechnical it's frightening, if he could just stick a disc in, he be fine. . .
#37
Seems to be still at this price on Amazon so not sure why its marked expired?

Does this device support drives formatted with NTFS?
#38
Not expired, just ordered one.

I have a popcornhour and have also gone for this, seems to be a good purchase and 3 year warranty has swayed me, need to know how to run the hackd firmware now

Taken from http://maddhat.com/?p=31 :

"The unit’s design is nearly identical to WD’s MyBook series drives. features two USB ports (one on the back, one on the side), an HDMI output supporting up to 1080p60, and an optical SPDIF output. It supports drives formatted with FAT32, NTFS, and HFS+ file systems."

A further question of my own for anyone with one already.. I'm a total n00b with all this kind of stuff, but I don't want to be de-muxing/re-muxing audio, because it can't decode DTS. I know if you hook it up to some AV receivers there's no need to transcode to AC3. Can anyone recommend a cheap receiver to me? Details of any cables or extras I'd need for it to work would also be appreciated, thanks.
