for the sake of 10p, it may be worth picking it up from a store - if you are in the locality of a store. its supposed by a nice weekend, go out with the family - pick one up whilst going put to the park or summat

In this instance I would personally buy from Amazon who have a good record in customer service rather than the shower of **** that are PCWorld....but thats just me! :-D

well i purchased an item from amazon which broke down after a couple months or so - phoned customer services and they told me to first check with the manufacturer - within the first year?

i queried this and the adviser said in the first year the retailer is the first port of call on product failure. I asked him why he advised me to contact the manufacturer - no reply. he followed with do i want a replacement? no mention of his mistake.

it seems no matter what store or retailer or service provider - there is always a negative.

You my son are wrong.. Plays m2ts absoulutrly fine also plays them in PS3 AVCHD ISO format aswell. Get your facts right before spouting off about a great little product.

I have found If films dont work get the new firmware and everything plays, everything and i mean everything I have thrown at it from VOBS, Vobs in ISO, MKV, with DTS, Divx, Movs, M2TS, AVCHD everything...

Brilliant wee piece of kit buy it......

Totally agree, PCworld customer service is sheer rubbish. Fools who call themselves Techguys{There may be some genuine guys who know about I.T at various stores but most i have dealt with know very little}, and i speak from lots of previous experience at my local store, unfortunately. Amazon are top notch with customer care such as refunds etc

Does this play 720p and 1080p Matroska files including DTS ones?

You need an external DTS decoder, the WDTV will output DTS through its optical out port ;-)

As above.

You can remux DTS files to AC3 extremely easily though, which is what I prefer to do.

Got mine from Amazon. Half of the files MKV files I have 5.1/DTS audio. If I knew this needs extra hardware I wouldn't have got one. Can anyone recommend a decent audio system under £100? Preferably with 2 optical ins.

Or as mentioned, you can remux DTS to AC3. Seeing as you don't have a system to decode DTS (and doubt those that do can feasibly tell the difference between DTS and AC3 5.1), it'd be much easier to remux DTS to AC3, which is flawless.

i really wanted one of these but they didnt come down in price in time so I ended up buying an Xbox elite which I am so pleased that i did, because not only can i watch HD dvd's on it, and hook it up to me external 1TB via usb and watch my collection of downloaded movies, dvd & pics, I also get to go online and play games with people around the world, to date I havent purchased a single game for the xbox because there are so so many demos you can download which are good enough to keep me entertained with me not being that big into gaming anyway. but now that xbox games are coming down i might buy 1 or 2

In theory, you could get one of these for £71.90 from pixmania by using a £7 voucher from this thread: http://hotukdeals.com/item/42717/free-7-voucher-for-both-you-and-a-f/

Note - use the link in post no 3. The £7 discount applies to a spend of £70 or more

You would have to wait until your 'friend' has made an order ofcourse. I ordered one and got £1.89 quidco tracked too, so total proice £70.01.

Hi all, I've always wanted to be copy my DVD collection onto my PC and be able to access them all directly from the TV.

I tried it once, but I didn't want to convert the movies - wanted to keep the entire menu, subtitle functionality and quality etc etc. Unfortunately, after copying some video_ts folders (and the vobs within), I found that nothing seems to play them remotely!

I could play them fine on the Windows PC, but couldn't stream them to the Xbox 360 or PS3 (useless consoles, both of 'em! :-D).

Question is, would the Western Digital box allow me to do the above flawlessly?

Parm it will play the vob files but not as you say flawlessly because it does not currently have menu support. Maybe in the future it will but not at the moment.
#33
Sorry for sounding thick..
But what does this actually do/replace?
#34
so what is the main difference between this and popcorn hour? Its £100 More expensive. Please someoe shed some light as i have been after a media player for a long time now.

I agree, I read a bunch of reviews on http://www.hdmediaplayers.co.uk and chose this one too, for the money it's the best available.

Pixmania is part of DSG - it will probably ship from France and be a European model though,

Not much at all - which is why people are snapping these up! I'll probably order from Play.com, £79.99, -Quidco and I can use my PlayFunds (so saving another 5%).

The Popcorn Hour tends to be sold with a hard disk internally and can decode DTS as standard. Both are fairly decent additions in my opinion, but when that extra £100 gets 500GB and DTS, suddenly remuxing to AC3 isn't such a big deal and buying a matching 1TB WD drive for £80 is a bit more suitable for me (600GB and counting).
