To clear up any confusion this does NOT have an ethernet connection, the WD TV HD LIVE media player has an ethernet connection which can stream from a pc and also has youtube, for more info about that player see here: http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/580654/western-digital-tv-hd-live-1080p-me?

Here are photos of the rear connections for this device:

Is it possible to update the firmware to add DTS support in the version 1 of these?
suspended 1 Like #2
no v1 of this doesn't have to correct chip to decode DTS i'm afraid. If you have an amp which can decode DTS it can pass the audio to it and let the amp decode it but if your amp can't do DTS decoding then you will get no audio i'm afraid. v2 can decode it itself though :)

Here is a photo of the back incase you are wondering what connections it has:

http://techreport.com/r.x/2009_3_12_Western_Digitals_WD_TV_HD_Media_Player/back_600.jpg

from left ro right there is the power socket, usb port, hdmi port, optical toslink port, composite (yellow), stereo phono ports (red+white)

Does this decode DTS?

You have to manually swap over the USB to your PC when you want to download new content?!

Only thing putting me off really.

oooohhhhh Now to find a NAS small enough to go with this! :D

yep you can only play off usb, however i think there are some custom firmwares that allow you to use an external usb dvd writer to play content from.

for more info about custom firmwares see here: http://b-rad.cc/

western digital releases the sourcecode for the firmwares so that people can help fix bugs and so that people can create custom firmwares and add additional functionality like FTP and Torrent clients.

You don't need a NAS for this - just a USB drive.

Hajj_3 - you beat me to it

A newbie question here...

Do you just copy films (including those 1080p ones shot with a Canon 5Dii) to any external HDD from your PC, and then connect the HDD to this gadget and it will output to a TV?
suspended#12
@ lotusjas: yes :) you should check on the western digital forums to make sure that the files from your camera work, i suggest uploading a 30mb sample to sendspace.com and posting the link in the forums and ask someone to test it.

Connect any usb pen or usb harddrive and you can play pretty much any media files off it. Make sure your tv has 1 of the connections that this box has, preferably a hdmi port.

Yes, but I don't want to keep moving stuff about so if I have a NAS drive I can just extract all my downloaded content to that!

no, it can't play .iso files with menu's unlike the popcorn hour a-110 or c200, but they cost £100+ more. But for for video or audio files it will play pretty much anything. So cheap for something that can play all your films, tv shows, music and photos.
#18
this is very tempting... does it have a visual media library, so sort and view all your movies?

sorry if it seems a stupid question, does this device upscale to HD ? I have a tv that has usb ports that plays AVI and DIvx but doesnt upscale. So was looking to get something to watch my movie collection with HD quality on my HD TV or cant this be done at all? Ta :)
#22
can someone explain what this device is for?
suspended#23
i'm not sure if it upscales but upscaling is a pretty much a gimmick, the only reason dvd's look better on dvd player that have a hdmi port is because you are using hdmi, scart gives awful quality, disabling upscaling on dvd players makes little difference and upscaling often worsens any pixelation so i wouldn't worry about that if i were you, especially with divx files, they wont look like HD on any device you play them on. assuming they are 640x352 xvid files or similar, if they are 720p then they will look good of course.
suspended#24
freedom07;7507301

playing video and audio files on your tv. These are very popular for people who download 720p x264 and 1080p x264 tv shows and films, xvid films or your music collection.
#25
Can someone confirm if this plays ALL mkv's ? The bit that's concerning me is :

"H.264 [email protected]"

Does that mean you'd have to transcode the ~50% or so mkv's that aren't at that profile, i.e. the same ones that you have to transcode (full transcode, not a remux/container change) for the PS3 to make them playable ?
suspended#26
nearly all mkv's are L4.1, certainly all movies released by scene groups. It supports L5 for 720p .mkv files, there should be very few that don't work and Western Digital release firmwares every few months fixing bugs.

Anyone know if this plays Panasonic AVCHD files?
#28
ok, i'm probably thinking about reference frames then...

thing is i was originally gonna buy a mac mini coz its small and i can plug it into tv to stream from online into tv and watch downloaded movies instead of plugging in a satelitte cable

if it does surf the net then how? how to control it type etc?

IMO nothing beats a HTPC, but then you are not going to be able to get a HTPC in this price range.

freedom07, the Western Digital LIVE has a youtube application built in, you use the number/keypad on your remote to type in. There isn't a web browser on there if thats what you are thinking. There is a BBC iplayer application on the LIVE version too.

usb2 can handle 32-35mb/s transfer speeds. 1080p x264 files are usually 7-10mb/s bitrate, its plenty fast enough.

@bellamy, that is a different player, that is the LIVE version with an ethernet connection, the firmware automatically updates itself on that box and the firmware was faulty so everyone was being given it. This player doesn't have an ethernet connection so that isn't a problem :P

there are a few legit places where you can download HD movies but you need to find out what files will work with your tv, i suggest you read your manual and then find somewhere where you can get movies that work with it.
