Got one of these from play.com for £79.99 seems they have put the price up...

Oh and they are awesome.....Update the firmware immediately...many improvements

I was considering one of these for the bedroom, rather than buying a second popcornhour....but the lack of internal drive capacity or network provision concerns me.

Does anyone know if I could plug in an external USB DVD drive and play my mkv movies that I have backed up on disk on this ?

Not in stock by the looks of it
#6
Out of stock though at Dabs, been looking into this today actually, first I heard of it, looks very promising. Doesn't seem to be much stock about though

I was under the impression these could not play x264 mkv's ( and therefore not worth buying ), yet mkv is listed above...anyone clarify this ?

Yes it can play x264 mkv files, up to 1080p as well apparently
#8
Pretty good but not being able to plug into a network to transfer files doesn't make it so appealing
#9
Stick with the more expensive popcorn hour if you can.

Network streaming plus the ability to play blu-ray .m2ts files and much more.

The trouble with these media players is that there are so many different video format standards carrying the same name. It would be difficult to cover (and update) them all in a media player. I always come across files which don't play, which is frustrating. A computer will play everything.

For the price of this plus a storage device you could buy a cheap computer or notebook and plug them directly into your tv. A computer would ensure that you can play any music and video file.

The other problem I see is buying from Dabs.com or BTShop. It's a minefield to purchase from there, and I speak from experience.

Or because it is from Dabs more likely!

No networking spoils an otherwise nice toy: without some connectivity, I just don't see the point :-(

Actually the last firmware update added 1080p24 support. And it will play blu-ray .m2ts files as well. It's the same chipset as the Popcorn hour, the only thing it doesn't do is stream over a network but it's half the price (ok you need a USB HDD but you need somewhere to store your videos with the Popcorn Hour as well). Personally I think it's a bargain and I'm definitely gonna pick one up

Hot bit of kit,but not hot price.

I got one just before Xmas from Makro who were doing them for £69.99 plus VAT.

As stated, defo do the firmware upgrade as soon as you get it from their official site.
