Just the usual suspects. Nothing to worry about from your side.... just their mental health! I have one of these.... HOT!

EDIT : I'll take that back given the post following this - but it would be better for people to say where there is a better deal instead of just voting cold. Thanks Xmal.

So best to either wait for the new version if you want network function or buy this version on clearance when the new one's released.

Computers don't always suit the decor/mood of a living room. It also means noone can use the computer whilst it is being used to feed the TV. They also take a lot more power. They also tend not to have a remote control with them.

In short I find that having the WD TV tidily plugged into my AV system is a much neater solution than having my laptop moved near the TV and then scrabbling around with wires to connect to the AV system.

If only it wouldn't turn itself on automatically, I hope they ditched the glossy plastic it scratched too easily.

I like the idea of getting one with networking capabilities. I read some of the comments on that page and there sure are a lot of unsatisfied peeps. I've had mine since December and It's been great. Despite what some comments say, WD have released firmware updates.

why waste £70 when I can feed HD video from my netbook to my PS3.
#20
Good price but be aware - very slow and pretty dreadful software for photo viewing. I had Apple TV bought one of these to replace and use with a bigger external hard drive, used for a few days and took it back (PC World)
Spent a bit more and gone back to Apple TV. WD does not come close. False economy.

No-one is asking you to. Not everyone has a netbook and/or PS3. See my comments earlier. From what I had read on other threads the PS3 isn't the quietest of machines. I don't think you will hear a sound from the WD box.

Because you PS3 uses over 200 watts when doing that?

Why wouldnt I just get a USB capable HDMI DVD player? Genuine question!

I can't help but find it funny that when the vast majority of you use this for piracy, you're still desperate to save a few pence on it

Maplin do a 500GB model c/w hard drive for £79.99 as a grade b unit (still guaranteed for 12 months). Just bought one and it works a treat.

I bought the HDMI model but this is out of stock just now

This plays MKV doesn't it?
#30
This went down to 65 pounds on amazon for a day earlier this week.
Great little machine. Unlike the PS3 it is quiet, supports more file types, and does not consume power like a microwave. I love my ps3 and the two coexist happily.
One complaint is that it does not power off the hard disk when you shut it down.
A dvd player with hdmi, USB and divx support is a good alternative, but you lose the portability - and you are unlikely to find one that will read all your video files. The cheaper ones don't even have optical out.
It is also a nice way to show your photos on the big screen, like with the ps3.

It does, and it upscales divx files nicely too.

The one from Maplin does

can this output in 24p?

any date on the new model? I might just hold off and buy that. The network port sells it to me, no need to copy and paste files to an external device.

You will have better compatibility with a laptop or desktop computer. Videos and Pictures will be better adjustable on screen with a computer and a good media player such as GOM, VLC or Classic Media Player.

However, unless you have a modern computer or notebook with HDMI out, a HD Media Player will have the better picture.

If the DVD player supports the video formats you need, there would be no difference. However, normal DVD player support just dvd and avi format and mpg if you are lucky. But you can play DVDs which you can't with the Western Digital.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_hardware

avg power consumption in ps3 is 110 watts. now with this wd box and external hard disk there wont be a big saving, plus to download in the harddisk and then connect it to the wd box isnt quite easy and is actually a pain. imo

Seems nice although there are many products With Storage, better if you haven't got to unplug and replug to share music etc...

Hi

Can I just ask, is this the same as us having our PS3 in the living room connected to the PC?
