Western Digital WD15EARS
1.5TB Hard Drive
SATAII
5400rpm
64MB Cache
OEM Caviar Green

5.1p per gb

Product Description
As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. WD Caviar Green drives make it possible for energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, ensured reliability, and energy conservation.

Yep £78.72 at amazon also, I guess one price matched the other as they did last time the price dropped. I have read about bad packaging for hard disks from amazon might want to look into that if you are thinking about getting this from amazon

Will the 64MB cache make much difference compared to a 32MB version?
#3
Grrr! I just bought a Spinpoint F3, will this be a better drive with a 64mb cache?
#4
Spinpoint F3s are excellent drives can't get much faster than them currently. Not keen on the WD with their new advanced non standard format, designed to give extra space on the drive but actually doesn't.

Packaging was fine on the 500gb Seagate drive I bought from Amazon at the back end of last year.
I've always found anything bought from Amazon is well packed.
#6
Very good price. If you want an external one Samsung have a 1.5TB one thats only £11 more: http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/10848847/Samsung-Story-Station-1-5TB-External-USB-Hard-Drive/Product.html

I bought a seagate drive from ebuyer a few years back. The drive was packaged in a padded box a little larger than the drive. This box was then placed in a larger box about 2 feet by 2 feet which had no internal packaging/padding at all so the drives were free to fly around inside the larger box - good old ebuyer.

guess everyone has different experiences from different places, myself, ebuyer had always packed the drives well. I read about people buying from amazon and receiving their drive in a corrogated card envelope thing they use for their books (there were mention about this as close to the end of 2009). might not apply to all drive manufacturers though since I was reading about Western Digital drives at the time.

also had no problem with saverstore, aria, simply (now misco), may have been some other places.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I've just bought an F3 and it seems a bit slow at the moment. Is there any way to benchmark the drive? I tried altering the AAM mode (makes it quieter) using the Samsung software, but this hasn't helped. Would the drive be happer if I upgraded the chipset drivers? Thanks ; )

Good price, but I'm hearing bad things about this drive, having bad slowdown problems
and people saying it's actually slower than the older WD15EADS in general...

Thats no good at all........ ill cross this of my list of things i want :)

Better going for 7200rpm 1TB:Quicker and cheaper
#13
I vote amazon better, returns policy atleast is amazing in comparison to ebuyer which seems to be we got ur money not go away

Though hot how cheap it is,
#14
Good deal! Shame its only 5400rpm though, better to future proof yourself a little (and get faster access) with a 7200rpm drive :)

heat added though
banned#15
Perfect for a long term storage solution, I will move my archive files off my 1tb spinpoint, on to this and use my spinpoint for media streaming.

Bought! heat and rep added.
#16
This is not meant to be blistering, but for storage it is perfectly good and benchmarks should be comparable to a Caviar Blue when considering large data transfer rather than absolute seek times etc.

Not meant to be used as a OS drive but great in a mirror raid for solid backup if necessary or just as a additional drive

go to htune.com download the trial and do read and write tests. The average should be 115 mb/s

Does anyone know if this drive will fit/work in a PS3?

It won't, this is a 3.5" drive, aka a standard desktop model.

nope, a little too big, I dont have a PS3 but from what I read PS3 takes Sata II 2.5" drives as do most laptops these days.

Have a look as this 2.5" 500gb Toshiba drive from ebuyer for £53.98

Yep.

Found out about this a couple of months ago.

Looking for a new computer, saw a PB at pc world on sale.
Went on the PB website to look at the specs and it had one of these HDDs in as standard (1gig version).

I have a Wd HDD in my ps3 and know the problems this head parking/unparking can cause on some applications (every 8 second if drive is idle).

Be aware, that some PC companys are using these drives in there PCs,so be sure to check.Although some are still listing them as 7200rpm drives in specs .....As PB were, unless you went into the detailed specs and it had the correct speed there (5400rpm)

You can turn the head parking feature off.

Look for a utility called "wdidle3" I use it on all my 2.5 inch WD Scorpio hacked xbox 360 drives i sell. Without it, you hear a constant "click" noise every few seconds.
