Wetherspoons breakfasts are also ok and cheap and miles cheaper than the motorway services.

Me and the wife stopped at the motorway services recently for some breakfast. We got two fry ups, two coffees and two jam doughnuts. I got to the cashier and I said, "I'm sorry, love, but I only have a £50 note."
"That's okay," she said, "just put the doughnuts back." :p

I just don't get all the hating on Wetherspoon - we went out to a country pub just before xmas.
1 pint, 1 coke, 2 small house wines, 2 packet of crisps, 2 soft drinks for the kids, all served by a surly barman in no hurry.

Had a few pence change from £20. Dafuq?!?

Not even the only pub in the village. Turns out my pint of Coke cost... £3.60. Three pounds and sixty pence for 6p of postmix. (yeah, I know, overheads blah blah).

For that total, in a Wetherspoon, we could have got that all twice over easily. I kind of lack sympathy when people whine about independent pubs going under. £3.60 coke might be an indicator...

Plus, I've never had a ropey meal in Wetherspoon, but I've had some pretty rancid "real" pub lunches.

i never understood why anyone would go to a pub or restaurant to order ham egg and chips?

i was thinking same. can cook ham eggs chips over and over again fresh fresh all week for same price no doubt.

Not if you're away and stopping in a B&B you can't. Or if you're going out from work and want something cheap and convenient to have for your tea.
You might just as well ask why sandwich shops exist when it's so easy to make a sandwich yourself.

My daughter was a cook at our local Spoons, all food is either organic or free range.

Was she in charge of the microwave or the boil in a bag station? The food maybe organic and free range, it certainly aint fresh though :)

You can't knock it for the price. It is no worse than you can pay double for in a lot of other places. Don't go in expecting Michellin star cuisine and you should come out happy.

Agree. Sunday Lunch, including a pint of Guinness. £5.49, (varies though). The two we go to have such a high turnover of food, its always tastes fine, and pretty busy on a Sundays. We hate cooking Sunday lunch, so nice to get a walk and pint, we vary it, but Wetherspoons is probably the better of the locals for food this time of year, just because it gets most of the custom.

At least its a proper meal, not KFC/McDonalds. I think Wetherspoons is trying really hard, especially when Gov taxes are skewed against Pubs, in favour of drinking at home. Which is never a good idea for some people.

Wetherspoons announce plans for 200 new pubs and 15,000 new jobs. Wetherspoon paid more than £600 million in taxes in our last financial year and this will rise to approximately £1 billion in the course of the next five years, doesn't sound like too much financial turmoil :)

Whatever you think of Wetherspoons food/beer, you can't knock their business model. Pubs are closing everywhere, yet this firm flourishes.

I like too that they have invested a heap of money into some really interesting buildings. Not everyone might like seeing them used as a pub but the fact is that they would be derelict or unused otherwise.
