Looking to buy it as a first road bike. Would I be ok to ride it on stoned roads and paths?

How this compares to Giant Defy 0?
The Giant has slightly better groupset combination. Really you are paying extra for the carbon frame. You don't tend to get 105 + carbon frame for under a grand though.
hot from me but not my size.

Defy 0 is good (aluminum frame so in theory not quite as good as this) but I am between the small and medium; cannondale fits me a bit better.

Great frame for the price, good find OP. Most people with quality bikes, especially for competitions will change/upgrade components regularly so buy just the frame is more usual than you would think.
Good price, good frame.

Nice find OP

Seems a lot of money for a bike frame - does it make that much difference to times you achieve?

For the sake of 50grams the merlin frame isn't decent? Carbon isn't all about weight but comfort too.
personally i would rather get a decent branded make, but thats personal preference
Sure, I agree, but you based quality on weight only.

yes that was wrong of me, make is better than a measly 50grams! but i still wouldn't buy that bike you posted, i'd get a decent make

Lol, Giant is the Skoda of the bike world, great bikes if you choose right, but there are some lemons, I would never put the name on the bike or even the manufacturer (Giant is the largest manufacturer in the world and makes for many other brands, some of who have a much better brand image), as the main reason for choosing a bike.

Choose a bike because

1) It fits right
2) It's the right price
3) It has a good compromise on components and equipment

The brand has absolutely no bearing on any of these, at the end of the day the brand is simply the sticker on the side of the bike nothing more.

Don't understand all the cold votes I.know you can get Carbon for this price but some people; myself included ride aluminium because they prefer it rather than not being able to afford carbon.

Although this wouldn't be my choice due to BB30, however a cracking deal.

i just cannot make myself like the cannondale branding

its a funny old bike, ultegra on an aluminium frame... i wouldnt consider it an ideal first road bike either, this is more like a cyclocross bike, which is fine if you want that but probs still better out there for the money at both ends, definitely if your just after a road bike anyway.

read the reviews, its a highly regarded bike, particularly at this price

im sure its decent enough, and for what your getting the price is about right, just if your after a road bike you could get lighter and full carbon, if your after a cyclocross then its alright for the price, just the latter is a bit more niche

yes of course you can get lighter, and carbon for this price, or a cx bike. but you won't find a road bike with ultegra and disc brakes on for this price (show me if you can find one?)

this aint full ultegra for a start, it has an FSA crankset.. but there arent that many road bikes that have disc brakes, yes theres a few but there definitely in the minority, hence my point about it being slightly odd, i dont know why people get caught up on ultegra though, like you have pointed it out to me as though this is the essential element of the bike.. frame is more important imo... who knows i once got told ultegra was jsut for those who couldnt afford DI2 and its the same as 105 but a little lighter... whats the point in it being lighted if your frame and brakes weigh more... might not be true but hey ho..

on the them of odd bikes... this has full 105 including crank and is a little cheaper.. with disc brakes for those so inclined here

dont think i would want disc brakes on my road bike... if i had £999 going spare id build myself a classic steel frame with campag super record...

but back in the real world id personally go for this and take the frame if i was buying right now, dont see the benefit in ultegra over 105..

but id go down the shops first, as its the end of season and there should be a bit of stuff getting knocked down

like i say though what you have listed isn't a bad bike, and i think its worth the money, just not my cup of tea

I've got a bike with 105 and Ultegra, they are not as good as each other, it's very much a debatable point as to whether it's worth the price difference, the differences are subtle, I've noticed in Ultegra is a little more forgiving when swapping wheels, expecially those with significantly different amounts of dishing, the 105 always requires tuning of the gears, Ultegra just works, might be my particular wheels but this was striking, also Ultegra just feels better. It also has marginally better stopping distances, though again this is subjective, since my Ultegra bike is a few kg lighter than my 105.

I would balk at the idea of disc brakes on road tyres but if the bike was fitted with cyclocross tyres then it's not a bad choice. I find Ultegra can quite easily induce a skid with too much force and is at least as good as for modulating the braking as either of my disc wheeled bikes (mountain and tourer), so clearly braking is dependent more on the tyres.

As I live in the North, where there's little investment in roads, a cyclocross road bike concept is quite interesting - I find I use my mountain bike far more than I used to, because of the state of some of the routes I use.

mike

would you go decent carbon frame and 105, or decent alu frame and ultegra? just interested whether you think the ultegra makes enough of a difference.

one of the ways of think has always been upgrading some of the components at a later date if you fancy it is easier than the frame

I think this post is going a bit off-track. again can you show me a decent carbon frame with 105 for £999? i'd like a carbon frame with Di2, cant see that for £999 can you? maybe you can actually!

Hide full quote

I said a 'decent' carbon frame, my alu one weighs less than that!

Your alu frame weighs less than 1100g, which is?

this

1050g... tbh though i prefered my trek 2.3 from back i nthe day that got nicked though, was a tociuh smaller with a sweet paint job and upgraded wheels :(

They have taken my money already and the 15th has passed and no status update on their website. mm...
Have you called them? I had a chat few times, very helpful bunch

Not yet, not implying they are dodgy by my comments, more like I doubt they received the items still, saw delivery for the other versions for the 26th.

So not hopeful they got delivery, will call them after work to find out.

*update
End of the month for delivery for the GoPro Hero 3 cameras.

Try updating it manually, it worked for me:

Update for Case #570193 - "Camera stops recording"

Hi Sebastian,

Thanks for getting in touch with us.

Sorry to hear that you're having issues with your HERO3.

Could you please follow the steps below to re-set your camera and update once more your camera:

- Remove SD card and Battery.
- Press and Hold Shutter Button (it will need to be kept pressed throughout the whole process)
- Insert the Battery
- Click the Power/Mode Button.

Camera should power up. After it powers up, make sure you insert a recommended micro-SD card and update the camera's firmware following the steps below:
1. Connect you camera to your computer with the USB cable and power it on.

2. To manually update the HERO3’s firmware you’ll need to have JAVA disabled on the Browser

3. Go to http://gopro.com/support/product-updates-support/ and choose your camera model.

4. You’ll get a message 'install Java' on your screen, please don't do so.

5. Please click the manually update camera link on lower-right. (you’ll need to click it twice to confirm). Fill in the registration fields.

6. On the next screen you’ll need to type in the camera’s serial number (it’s case sensitive, so make sure that you have Caps Lock ON)

7. Following will be the registration information for the WiFi connection.

8. You’ll then have the link the download the firmware update files, which are downloaded in a standard zipped folder.

9. After you have the zip file on your computer, place ALL files that come inside the zip onto the root of your micro-SD card.

10. Power Off the camera, and unplug it from the computer.

11. Power On the camera, the update process will begin automatically. Please do not press any buttons at this stage.
The firmware update can take between 5 to 10 minutes, and the camera may power off and back on by itself.

To confirm it was updated successfully please follow these steps:

- Power On the camera.
- Format SD Card
- Take a Single Photo
- Access the SD card with a Computer
- Under the MISC folder, there will be a version.txt file
- This file contains the firmware versions installed on the camera (both camera and wifi). Please copy the content of it onto your reply.

This should get everything up and running.

Please let us know how it goes.

Many Thanks

Douglas V.
