Great film. Rarely seen this film under double figures. Next cheapest is £10.93 @ Amazon (£9.48 Amazon Prime). Also 4% cashback through quidco.

Jim and Hilda Bloggs are the typical, retired couple in rural England. They drink endless cups of tea and have an unwavering faith in the wisdom of their government. They understand that a Third World War is imminent between the US and the Soviets. However, they fail to grasp the concept that war will be fought by nuclear means, and what consequences this will have.

With the help of government issued pamphlets Jim builds a shelter to protect the couple, and although they survive a nuclear blast they are completely ignorant to the fact that the radiation from the fall out is killing them. All the time they believe in their government and that, sooner rather than later, everything will be back to the way it was...

Jimmy T. Murakami's chilling animation is based on the book by children's author, Raymond Briggs

As depressing as Watership Down. Definately not suitable for Children, IMO. Music by David Bowie.

Good film. Liked this a lot as a kid. Full of scary WW3 nuclear threat.

Thank you! Hot + Rep!

the b side of the soundtrack album is basically a 23 minute roger waters mini concept album, post pros and cons, pre radio kaos. it's not his best work, and probably quite forgotten about. i got the cd when it was first released, but it was only released officially on dvd a couple of years ago. it's in 4:3 academy ratio and stereo as it was made for the tv

it's a similar style to the snowman, but of course a much more depressing theme, from the times in the 80s where everyone was scared of dying from nuclear attack or aids. threads was the other infamous bbc drama from around that time, also available on dvd now. reasonably scary and convincing at the time, but not these days

this isn't the bargain of the year, but it's the first time i've seen the dvd listed at a decent price as it wasn't discounted well when it first came out

Absolute stonkin' film... As stated already, may be not one for the kids - even though we saw it at school - as the country... Nay the world has gone all namby pamby and kid's are affected by this now and become serial killers as a result...

Where am I?!?

When I was a kid this absolutely terrified me and it still upsets me - but it's an amazing story with iconic animation and for that reason £5.99 is a great price to pay for animation history.
#11
Thanks. Rep added. Remember watching this in school and have been wanting to buy it for a while, wouldnt pay over a tenner but this is a bargain.
#12
OMG, who wants to be depressed by this sort of Cold War old stuff.
#13
OMG I also remember being 'made' to watch this at school, i came home and was so s**t scared we were all going to die from a nuclear attack, i didn't sleep for a week!
I agree though, a classic animation so voted HOT!

Your comments are ****.

If you are British and your relatives were there then you will know what it's all about (even the suicide pill was considered in WW2) but obviously you are from a place that was saved byBritih people anyway..

Let me know when you've made a point out of that nonsensical tirade.

No Britain no world God Save The Queeen.......

Sorry, but that makes even less sense then your first effort.

It's an animated film made in 1986 about a nuclear attack during the Cold War. There was 5 decades of the Cold War and I grew up through 3 of them having to endure this sort of stuff on a regular basis to the point until like most people we were scared whitless when they installed a nuclear attack siren near-by and thought the bomb would drop at any moment. I am British and know all about this film. Now what the **** are you going on about?

I watched this in school like many others and felt it had no relevance at the time. Maybe in the 60's, 70's and possibly early 80's it would of left an impression.

I don't have any desire to watch it again and showing it to kids now would give a wrong impression. The war of terror is the new cold war, so we're told.
#17
Temporarily out of stock....

Apparently it's also listed on CD WOW's site for £3.99 as temporaily unavailable....but you can't order it from them!
#18
wow, watched this at school in the 80s, classic film

Definitely should be watched by children, maybe the country wouldn't be so full of idiotic sheep who think "the authorities will be along soon to things out".

Eh? that made absolutely no sense.

God take the queen.

The war of terror is the new cold war, so we're told.

Exactly, so show it to children and explain to them how governments use fear (terror, nuclear, etc) to control the populace.

Couldn't agree more. Unless you have an historical interest in animation then I can't see this as being entertaining or a must see film. I lived through 3 decades of having nuclear armageddon statistics being rammed down my throat and have no desire in reliving it.

Does it come with free cotton wool so we can wrap our children in it whilst watching it?

Pointless, this film is about nuclear war during a particular period. Kids won't relate to it.

I think you seriously underestimate children. A bunch of 12-14yr old emos watched threads at a social centre a few weeks back, and many of them made comparisons between then and now and empathised with the characters.

You tell me this now, why? Also your chosen age group is higher than I was implying. Did they come to these conclusions freely or were the parallels discussed beforehand?

Also, Threads is not exactly what you would expect to see down a social centre unless someone had an agenda.

You tell me this now, why?

You claimed children couldn't relate to the time or themes, I gave you just one instance where they did.

Also your chosen age group is higher than I was implying.

You said "kids", you didn't imply ANY age. You may have had a particular age-range in mind but you certainly didn't make any reference (implied or otherwise) to it previously.

Did they come to these conclusions freely or were the parallels discussed beforehand?

All discussion was kept until after the showing, although some had researched it beforehand (nerdy emo's for you ;p ) and one had even watched it before.

Also, Threads is not exactly what you would expect to see down a social centre unless someone had an agenda.

It's exactly the type of thing you would see at a social centre - anti-nuclear/anti-war/anti-capitalism/class struggle are usually the things discussed at them.

The agenda is whatever a member of the public (or one of the working groups) would like to use the space for.

"convenient" lol you sound like a conspiracy theorist.

And I'm nobodys comrade, mucker. Never mind, eh. No wonder so many children are so disaffected when there are adults like you believing they are idiots.

Or maybe you only mean the younger ones? kekekeke.
