Wii (pronounced 'we') is Nintendo's new home video game console that represents a radical step into a new era of entertainment. For years, video games have been growing in popularity but also in complexity. With Wii, Nintendo changes the way you play by maximising the fun and minimising the fuss. The Wii console makes you feel less like a player and more like you're in the game. Frenzied sword battles are no longer confined to pushing a button. With Wii's unique Wii Remote controller, Nintendo puts you in the middle of the action. Forget about pushing a button to start a golf backswing. Wii lets you swing the club! Don't push a button to swing a sword, actually swing the sword. Video games have always been a part of you, now you get to be a part of them. Step up to the next level of gaming. Over time, gaming has become overwhelming to people. The Wii console returns gaming to simpler times while innovating game development at the same time. The unique Wii Remote gives parents and grandparents a chance to play games with their children. It gives gamers and traditional non-gamers a chance to share the same experiences in this new generation of gaming. For those who grew up with video games, Wii shows that games have not outgrown them.

Great deal if you can get one thats in 1 piece

Picked one up from CeX a few months back for £50 as it was classed as being scratched and unboxed. Turns out they found a box for it, everything was included and the scratches were tiny. There were a couple of black marks, but they came off easily enough.

I would be surprised if Sony will allow Xbox or Wii in any versions to play blu rays.

Also the current wii doesn't play DVDs unless you softmod it anyway
#12
does it come with a controller?
also anyone know where to go for soft mod info?
#13
We don't have CEX in Scotland, but wish we did as they're prices are always great. Far better than that of Game, or the grubby Gamestation
#14
SUrely long term its better for Sony that they get as many blus in the marketplace as they can.

My local branch always has loads in stock of the Wii

Yes, they do come with one controler and one nunchuck and other cables needed.

If you have software version 4.3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMbqV2vUOGE

If below that, you can upgrade or just google it as for 4.3 you need a game Lego Indiana Jones, for lower versions you can do without it

It's not a case of 'allowing' anyone to do anything. Sony is just one of the members of the Blu ray Disc association, but even then companies within the association do compete all the time. There are other Blu ray bare drive component manufacturers than Sony and there are also many situations in the electronics industry where companies both compete and supply (since divisions within most companies are somewhat autonomous). For example, Samsung manufacturing and supplying screens for the iPad as well as having their own tablet models that directly compete. If it could be shown that Nintendo were deliberately being hampered by Sony (by having them put pressure on other members or impeding them in some way) then I'm sure it would also be construed as anti-competitive behaviour.

I agree that it's not likely we'll see blu ray or dvd drives that can directly play movies in the Wii U but not for that reason. Physical sales of both media appear to be flat to dropping off, even companies like Netflix and Lovefilm (in conjunction with Amazon) seem to ramping up their streaming offerings, players are inexpensive and getting cheaper all the time. All of Nintendo's recent emphasis has been on adding online streaming services. The Wii U if anything is likely to more of a streaming 'hub' than a player of physical movie disks compared to the Wii. So the logic of them refocussing that now does seem unlikely especially as it would also involve them paying licence fees.

Fair enough. This seems reasonable, but at the same time this group might decide not to allow others to come to play. Companies need to have market advantage and anti-competitive behaviour is a daily routine. This is quite common barrier on the market and since Nintendo nor Microsoft are not part of this association I don't see them getting Blu Ray.

As you say there might be also other reasons for these companies no to go towards Blu-Ray solutions, but at the end of the day Blu Ray is not only used for Films and HD games need a lot of storage. Next generations of consoles might struggle with whatever even Double Layer DVD gives them.

Funny, i got a £45 voucher :) But this looks like dirt on my Optoma HD 67 projector, and worse on my 42" samsung plasma... Don't think its worth it to play on a 17" screen? :D

A wii component cable should sort that out. Unless you already have one.
#29
I also highly recommend getting a component (5 plug) cable, it makes an amazing difference. Preferable a Nintendo one, but third party component cable is already miles better than any non-component alternative.

Funnily enough I also bought a replacement Scart cable thinking it would improve quality, but it just made everything noticably more green. Funny how different cables can give different results for analog video signals.

This is very cheap. I feel tempted although I sold my Wii about a year ago.
The only game I'm looking forward to is Zelda Skyward sword so it's probably not worth bothering.

Actually i've found CEX have quite a stringent policy on all their goods, especially since they provide a 12 month warranty on all their 2nd hand electronic goods.

Doesn't matter how long the warranty with them is, their online customer service is absolutely shocking! It has taken me 6 weeks to get a refund for something that they sent in error, God help you if you have to prove to them that something electronic has a fault!
#38
Of course this would also assume that they send the right thing with all the necessary attachments in the first place! :D Anyway, as I said in the first post....buy in store if you have to use them at all.

Perhaps but I'm just reaaaally broke at the moment and the only two other games I could see myself playing on the Wii I've found substitutes for on xbox360/ps3, so it's hard to justify buying it. Is there really no other top games on the horizon?

For those without a CEX near them the current GAME instore offer is a white wii (used) with any new game to a value of £19.99 for £69.99 with a 12 month warranty.
