Surely any device that you are trying to connect to WiFi has this built in.

Not meaning to bash the deal but don't most phones have a hotspot finder already built in? Just go to WiFi settings (if your phone has wifi, most new phones of reasonable budget do), when you go to select a network it will display all the names, signal strength etc and saves having another item in your pocket.

Then there are apps which make the whole process even faster on the iPhone, Android etc.

Ok, but what if it detects a Wifi network with encryption, or an open network where you need an account (like BT OpenZone) or that has MAC filtering on? After booting your laptop you'll just find out that you can't connect to those.

Got one for a pound several years ago. Works but, as pointed out above, limited use in practice.

So why not just use your phone without booting the laptop and that will identify if the network is secured or not and provide names..

I didn't vote either way fwiw.
